Created for Netflix by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. It follows a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes reuniting to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an imminent apocalypse. Along with the aforementioned cast members, the series also stars John Magaro, Mary J. Blige, Cameron Britton, Adam Godley, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland, and Kate Walsh.
Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in 2019 to instant success for the streamer. In its first month of release, the series reportedly pulled in 45 million viewers to become one of that year’s most-watched titles. Because of this success, Netflix renewed the show for season 2 shortly after season 1’s premiere, with the second season dropping in July 2020. In November, Netflix officially renewed the show for season 3 amid uncertainty over its future.
“What we love is we’re doing a wilder, bigger, zanier, season than ever before. I think our emotional stories between this dysfunctional family, we’re just building it up even more,” showrunner Steve Blackman previously said of what’s to come in season 3. “There’s some very big surprises with the family this year. There are some amazing changes that people will love to sort of dig into, and there’s a lot of growth for this family this year in a way that people are just not going to expect.”
Teasing that big fans will have a lot of fun Easter eggs to try and spot in the new episodes, Blackman added: “I can give you absolutely no hint, but I tell you that we have tons of Easter eggs. We love putting Easter eggs in for our fans, and there’s more Easter eggs than ever this year than our previous seasons.”
Netflix has not yet set an official release date for the third season of The Umbrella Academy, but with season 3 now in the can, we’ll hopefully get a release window in the near future. For now, fans can watch the first two seasons in their entirety on Netflix.
