Antony Starr is officially back in the boots as Homelander on the set of The Boys season 3. This week, series showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that production had started on the new episodes with an image of a golden Homelander statue from the set. We now have our first look at Homelander’s return in season 3 with Starr tweeting a picture of his lower legs, revealing that he’s back in the blue tights and red boots to reprise the role of the dastardly superhero.

“Five thirty am and we shootin,” Antony Starr writes in the caption, adding a winking-face emoji. From the start of the series, Starr has been shining in the role of Homelander. A blonde-haired, blue-eyed patriotic superhero, Homelander is adored by millions of fans who only know him by the public image he presents. Behind the scenes, the “superhero” is in actuality a particularly sinister villain, corrupted to the core and secretly harboring a murderous rage. The only thing keeping the incredibly-powerful Supe from destroying the world as we know it is his desire to be loved as the world’s most famous personality.

It also appears Homelander will be meeting his match in the third season. Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has been cast to play the Captain America-like superhero Soldier Boy when the series returns. Kripke has teased that Soldier Boy will be even worse than Homelander, and it seems likely that the two will somehow clash. As the title of the season 3 premiere alludes to the comic book storyline involving Soldier Boy, Ackles is likely to arrive very early into the next season.
Homelander is the leader of a corrupt group of superheroes similar to the Justice League. Along with Homelander, the group has consisted of other Supes like Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), the Deep (Chace Crawford), Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), and Stormfront (Aya Cash). The series also stars Colby Minifie also stars Ashley Barrett, a publicist whose job is to maintain the group’s positive public image, and Giancarlo Esposito as Vaught International CEO Stan Edgar.
Challenging the superheroes and keeping an eye on their every move is a vigilante group known as the Boys, consisting of leader Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara).
Given its popularity, it doesn’t seem that The Boys will be ending anytime soon. Last year, Kripke said that there’s storyline potential in the tank to keep the show going for at least five seasons. Starr reaffirmed these comments while speaking to ComicBook.com last month, telling the outlet, “I think we’ve got a few good seasons in us yet.” Because it’s become one of the world’s most popular shows, we can expect Amazon will also want to keep the money train moving for a while longer.
The first two seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. An official release date hasn’t yet been set by the streamer for season 3.
