One of the most memorable characters in The Rookie recently made his glorious return to the series. In a fun and wild adventure, the eternally optimistic live wire, Skip Tracer Randy, brought in a new wave of chaos like only he can. In the seven seasons of The Rookie, the police procedural has never seen a character who so perfectly captures the spirit of the show. Love him or love to hate him, Skip Tracer Randy is an undeniable tornado of excitement that this show could use more often.
In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 17, titled “Mutiny and the Bounty”, former bounty hunter and second-best friend to Nolan, Skip Tracer Randy, returned with wonderful news: he’s really, really rich. Thanks to an early investment in bitcoin, Randy is now a “hundred-millionaire.” And he’s in love. Determined to splash his funds on the object of his affection, Randy turns to Nolan for advice on wooing Chastity, Nolan’s half-brother’s girlfriend. But when his extravagant efforts at courtship result in Chastity being kidnapped, Nolan and the team must find Chastity, prevent a bounty hunter siege, and control the uncontrollable chaos that is Randy.

The Best New Character in ‘The Rookie’ Only Lasted One Episode
‘The Rookie’ got rid of one of its most popular new characters after just one episode.
So why not more? Since his onscreen introduction in The Rookie Season 2, Skip Tracer Randy has been a periodic addition to the series. First appearing in a voice-only role, it wasn’t long before Randy made his onscreen debut with the Season 2 episode titled “Long Shot,” which introduced his short-term career as a bounty hunter. Funny, energetic, and a breath of fresh air with his optimistic takes, Randy has quickly become a favorite among fans despite his brief appearances.
This Fan-Favorite ‘Rookie’ Character Needs More Screentime
ABC
The character averages one episode a season, but always manages to leave an impression. Should Randy be promoted to a steady background character, which he should, this would give the character more opportunities to shine. With his unpredictable nature and hilarious efforts to circumvent the law, Randy enlivens any given situation. Played by Flula Borg (The Suicide Squad, My Spy: The Eternal City), the character is immensely likable, though slightly overwhelming. Perhaps it is for this reason that Randy is only pulled out for the occasional episode. Even with his rare appearances, some fans find his character to be a bit too over the top. Many threads across social media are dedicated to conversations about the character and whether he should be tossed off a cliff or promoted to series regular.
Detractors say that a little bit of this character goes a long way, while fans of the character want more. While this is a vast expanse of love and hate, there may be a chance for a happy medium somewhere in this scenario. His character is too good to waste on the shelves of The Rookie cast. Perhaps a semi-frequent appearance, much like how Daddy Cop (Celina’s boyfriend) and Tamara (Lucy’s former roommate) have become steady background characters, could serve both sides of the audience.

In the season finale, Nolan and the team work to track down diabolical escaped convict Oscar Hutchinson in “The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar.”
