‘The Running Man’ Trailer Finds Glen Powell Fighting for His Life

Millions Hunt. One Runs. Everyone Watches. The upcoming adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Running Man has unleashed its gripping first trailer. Starring Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell, The Running Man is set to be released in theaters on November 7, 2025. The first footage from the dystopian action movie promises all manner of high-stakes sprinting and evasion as Powell takes the lead as a man fighting for his life on a deadly show on prime-time television.

The Running Man is a new reimagining of the 1982 novel of the same name by King (written under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman), which was already adapted in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead. The story takes place in a future dystopian society where audiences have become obsessed with a new game show called The Running Man. In the game, the contestants must find a way to escape from hunters who are out to kill them on live television.

10 Performances in Stephen King Movies That Are Massively Underrated

Famous for being character-driven films, Stephen King’s adaptations always have memorable performances. These are the most underrated.

The film is directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who co-writes with Michael Bacall. The film stars Powell alongside Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, Katy O’Brian, Josh Brolin and Lee Pace, among others. Alongside the newly released trailer, you can check out the official synopsis for The Running Man remake below:

In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

Glen Powell’s ‘The Running Man’ Joins a Slew of Other Upcoming Stephen King Adaptations

The Running Man is one of several Stephen King adaptations that will arrive in the near future. 2025 has already seen the release of two films adapted from two very different stories by the master of horror. Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey was released in February, and then it had its digital streaming debut in April. Meanwhile, Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck had a lukewarm response in theaters after being released in June, and hopefully, it’ll have a better reception once it arrives on streaming (no release date yet).

Before the release of the survival thriller starring Glen Powell, fans of the author will see the TV adaptation of the supernatural thriller The Institute, which will be streaming on MGM+ on July 13. After that, a long-awaited adaptation will be arriving in theaters. Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk, starring Mark Hamill, Cooper Hoffman, Ben Wang, and Judy Greer, will premiere on Sept.12.

The last quarter of the year will see the release of the highly anticipated TV series It: Welcome to Derry on HBO Max, although no date has been made official by the streamer. Then there are others in production or in development. Flanagan is shooting the TV series Carrie for Amazon MGM Studios, and he’s working on the TV adaptation of King’s literary masterpiece The Dark Tower. Most recently, it was announced that Doug Liman, of The Bourne Identity and Road House fame, will be remaking The Stand. “Nature bites back” thriller Cujo is also being remade by Netflix. Horror producer Roy Lee will back the film, which is eyeing Darren Aronofsky as director.
