‘The Sandman’ Showrunner Says Neil Gaiman Harassment Allegations Did Not Cause Cancelation

Netflix has released a brand-new look at the second and final season of The Sandman, while the series showrunner has rejected the belief that recent allegations of inappropriate behavior by creator Neil Gaiman caused the cancelation of the series. Two new images shared by Entertainment Weekly have revealed a look at former Game of Thrones star Jack Gleeson’s Puck and Barry Sloane’s Destruction, giving fans something else to think about other than the behind-the-scenes drama that some are adamant derailed the show from continuing into a third season.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg addressed the allegations against Gaiman as having “unfortunate timing” but refuted that it led to the cancelation of more seasons. He explained that due to the series building a story around Dream (Tom Sturridge) it was decided early on that the show would not run for long. He said:

“It was a decision we made three years ago. There are some volumes where he just appears in two scenes. There’s so many protagonists in Sandman, but you think of the whole thing as his story. It turned out to be about another season’s worth of story, without leaving out anybody’s favorite moments or scenes.

How Is Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives Connected to The Sandman?

Netflix’s newest series, Dead Boy Detectives, is part of DC’s The Sandman universe; here is how the shows connect and their comic history together.

I can’t say that it affected our process, which is scheduled years in advance. These are your delivery dates and you just keep going. So it’s been in the periphery of my experience and the background of my experience, but it hasn’t been part of the world of the making of the show, if that makes sense. Every production is its own little island. Even though we were in London, my experience was very limited to the making of the show, even in my personal life, which I did not have for the last six years.”

‘The Sandman’ Did Not Quite Perform as Well as Expected

Bringing an extremely expensive fantasy series to life on Netflix is a daunting task given the streamer’s frequent cancelation of such shows after just a single season. The Sandman has been given more of a run than many, and it seems that it will see out the original plan of telling its story over two seasons.

When the show originally hit Netflix, it topped the streaming chart for a short while, but ultimately did not blow away viewership records and therefore a renewal was a long time coming. While The Sandman was finally given the green light for Season 2, the loosely-linked Dead Boy Detectives series was not so lucky, and did find itself on the chopping block after releasing a single season on Netflix as part of a deal with Warner Bros. Although the allegations against Gaiman may not be the reason for The Sandman’s ending, it has certainly impacted many of the author’s creations.

The David Tennant and Michael Sheen series Good Omens, based on the novel by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, will end with a single feature-length episode rather than what appeared to be an original full-season finale. Additionally, an adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book was shut down at Disney following the allegations being revealed. Now, other than The Sandman, Gaiman-related projects seem to be one of the least likely to be commissioned anytime soon.
