How far does someone go to fulfill their childhood dream? Is it worth traveling 7,879 miles across the ocean to a foreign land? Artist and illustrator Ting-en Tsai would answer with an unequivocal “yes.” Filled with hope and raw talent, this young creative from Taipei, Taiwan, found a way to rise in the New York art scene.

A Competitive Art World Awaits
Over the years, millions have flocked to New York seeking fame, fortune, or a new start in life. As the premiere epicenter for world-class museums, galleries, and art fairs, it’s a haven of
opportunity for aspiring artists. However, entering this competitive world can be challenging. Imagine a creative person coming to “The Big Apple” without speaking the language, knowing the culture, or having formal art training. The odds of success aren’t good. That’s the dilemma Tsai faced, but they pushed through the barriers to make a name for themself.

Obstacles Become Stepping Stones
As a child, Tsai had a passion for drawing. However, growing up in Taiwan, social expectations prevented them from receiving formal art education. Instead, they taught themself and drew on any scrap of paper they could find. The young artist found inspiration in diverse media, such as American and Japanese animated shows accessible with the family’s computer, books about historical tales, and the ocean of the 2010s internet where translated comics and artists’ social media were at one’s fingertips under a stable Wi-Fi. Years later, this eclectic mix of influences would morph into their signature style.

The next step in their artistic journey was moving to the U.S. to attend Parsons School of Design. Transitioning from Taiwan to New York presented significant cultural and linguistic
challenges. It wasn’t easy adapting to a new culture and overcoming language barriers. However, these obstacles became stepping stones for Tsai’s creative growth.

“I remember in my first few months in New York, I struggled to understand half of the conversations my peers were having. So, I pushed myself to speak as often as possible in creative settings. Even though I felt nervous and ‘wrong’ to speak out, I would try my best to contribute whenever I had something to say,” Tsai says. ” This has significantly planted my skills in critical thinking and confronting normality, which are crucial elements in creating art.”

A New Talent Makes Waves in New York

Over the years, Tsai has flourished as an artist and illustrator in the NYC art circles. They have worked as an artist and designer with prestigious organizations and influential businesses, such as the Society of Illustrators, the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute, Creature World, and Scentbird. Additionally, they have inked a deal with The Right Factory as a graphic novel artist. Tsai also has collaborated with bands and media outlets, such as CommonWealth Media and New School Free Press, to illustrate editorial materials for their online publications.

Tsai’s exhibitions in Manhattan have taken place at creative spaces like Mriya Gallery and Art on the Ave at World Trade Center Oculus.

The flashy holiday market beneath the branches decorated with plastic bags and the soundtrack of late-night subway trains and yelling New Yorkers showcase just a small part of a complex tapestry.
