Before actress Andrea Savage took on the role of ATF agent (and mafioso love interest) Stacy Beale on the Sylvester Stallone-led hit, Tulsa King, she was busy proving to audiences just what a comedian she is. In 2017, she created and starred in a semi-biographical sitcom for TruTV called I’m Sorry. She plays an LA-based comedy writer, Andrea Warren, navigating the ups and downs of her career and personal life alongside her husband and young daughter. Featuring crude jokes, surprisingly relatable situation comedy, and great performances, the show struck a chord with viewers. Just not enough of them.

Tom Everett Scott appears as Andrea’s husband, Mike Harris, an affable partner who aces the role of a good sport in the face of his wife’s antics and often plays along — such as when Andrea tries to renegotiate their “marriage contract” on their 10th anniversary with the sticking point that Mike has to keep his toned butt in shape. He is a breath of fresh air when it comes to sitcom husbands and dads who are often depicted as absent, dumb, or actively douchey.

In contrast, Mike is supportive of his wife’s endeavors and an active participant in raising their daughter to be an intelligent and kind person — and one with a sense of humor. Olive Petrucci plays their daughter Amelia, who provides plenty of sticky situations for the two to deal with, like when she asks about how babies are born and ends up telling an entire restaurant how her mom has a huge vagina. The late Emmy-nominated actor Martin Mull also appears as Andrea’s newly-divorced-and-ready-to-hit-the-town dad, who brings the perspective of yet another generation to the series and plenty of comedic fodder.
There are plenty of misconceptions about women in comedy, specifically moms. The typical assumption is that one must have a tragic backstory, deep pain, or a life in disarray in order to be funny, or that one must only talk about sex and genitalia. However, the opposite judgment is often placed on mothers, where it’s assumed that after giving birth, they can only make wholesome content about school drop-offs and cringey things their kids say. Neither of these stereotypes are representative of the full scope of female comedy or even a realistic depiction of our society.

Being brash or bawdy and sometimes putting yourself first doesn’t mean you’re a bad mom, and you also don’t have to trade in your sense of humor after having a baby. I’m Sorry succeeds at showing that one’s life doesn’t end after becoming a parent and proves that some families that appear chaotic on the outside can actually be some of the healthiest, and that it’s possible to find the humor in nearly every situation.
Andrea’s career is also a focus of the show, with her kooky writing partner played by the wonderful Jason Mantzoukas, and the hilarious Nick Kroll and Paul Scheer as some of their comedy friends. Their circle provides the perfect backdrop necessary for all of them to feel comfortable with the vulnerability that comes with making fun of yourself for a living — and proves that you can still be funny without being offensive. It’s also a great example of why having a support system outside of your immediate family is so important for a well-balanced life.
‘I’m Sorry’ Was Cut Too Short

Unfortunately, I’m Sorry ended after just two seasons when the filming of Season 3 was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently never picked up again. In an interview with ScaryMommy, Savage explained the pain of losing her show, saying:
“I couldn’t even talk about it at the time. Maybe we will finish it at some point. It was so shocking, too, because it was bigger than it had ever been and really taking off … Also, we were in the middle of shooting it, you already spent so much money.”
While there’s been no indication that I’m Sorry will ever return, its highly-celebrated two seasons remain a relatable escape for viewers who want a reminder that you can find the humor in whatever ridiculousness life throws at you. I’m Sorry is streaming on YoutubeTV and Hulu Live.
