China Institute kicked off its centennial celebrations at The Pierre Tuesday night, where a head-turning mix of designers, supermodels, fashion veterans, and cultural power players gathered for the organization’s Grand Fashion Gala — a sweeping celebration of Chinese creativity on the global stage.
The evening, co-chaired by Yue-Sai Kan, founder and chairwoman of the Yue-Sai Kan One World Foundation and one of Chinese fashion’s most influential champions, and Lynn-Cheng Zhang, CEO of Zhang Financial, brought together generations of talent who have helped redefine how Chinese fashion is seen around the world.

Among the night’s biggest names? Vera Wang, Vivienne Tam, Guo Pei, and Jason Wu —four designers whose distinctive visions have helped put Chinese and Chinese American fashion firmly on the international map. Wang and Guo Pei were honored as Fashion Ambassadors, and fellow honoree Tam unveiled a special collection created for China Institute’s 100th anniversary.

Tam — whose career has long been defined by an instinctive mix of Chinese iconography, downtown New York energy, and East-meets-West cool—was in a reflective mood. “When I started in NYC more than 25 years ago, I felt alone in what I was doing,” she said. “Now I am elated to be in great company with the new generation of Chinese designers who are breaking barriers and becoming internationally respected.”
And what company it was. The runway became a fast-moving survey of Chinese fashion today, with Jason Wu bringing the sophisticated femininity and polished glamour that have made him an international fashion force. Collections from Grace Chen, Laurence Xu, Sandriver, Wang Feng, and Xiong Ying rounded out the presentation with contemporary Chinese craftsmanship and plenty of red-carpet-worthy drama.
But Guo Pei knows a thing or two about delivering a finale. The legendary couturier closed the show with the sort of unabashed fashion fantasy that has made her a global name. Her procession of elaborate haute couture culminated in a breathtaking white-and-gold gown worn by Miss Venezuela—a spectacular creation reportedly requiring more than 40,000 hours of craftsmanship.
The evening also honored a fashionable roster of industry figures, including Fern Mallis, Fadil Berisha, Ma Yanli, Lucia Liu, Roseline Luo, Kerina Wang, and Jessica Wang, recognizing their contributions to fashion and culture.
And naturally, the crowd was almost as compelling as the clothes. Seminal Chinese supermodels Ma Yanli and Bonnie Chen mingled with legendary model Carmen Dell’Orefice and fashion icon Carol Alt, making the room something of an impromptu supermodel reunion. Miss America, Jamie Wu, Susan Shin, and Evelyn Yuan were also among the guests turning out for the celebration.
Beyond the gowns, flashbulbs, and familiar faces, there was a larger message running through the evening: Chinese designers are no longer simply being “introduced” to the international fashion establishment. From Wang, Wu, Tam, and Guo Pei to the generation following them, they are firmly part of it. Fashion, after all, may be one of culture’s most persuasive forms of soft power: no translation required.
China Institute’s centennial may have provided the reason to look back, but the evening felt considerably more interested in looking forward. And if this is what 100 looks like? Consider us ready for the next century.
