What If…? Season 3 Trailer Teases X-Men and the End of It All in the Marvel Multiverse

We finally have our first good look at the upcoming Marvel and Disney Plus animated series, What If…? Season 3, which teases all manner of multiversal madness when it lands on the streaming platform later this year on December 22. Coming as part of Phase Five of the MCU, What If…? Season 3 will be made up of eight episodes and is all set to feature the likes of Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson/Captain America, Shuri/Black Panther, and more.

You can check out the newly released trailer for What If…? Season 3 below.

The first season of What If…? premiered back in 2021, and explores various alternate timelines across the multiverse in which major moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe occur differently, as observed by the Watcher, a member of an alien race who observes the multiverse…but does not interfere. Created by A. C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+ and based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name, What If…? flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series, it focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles.

The series will see Jeffrey Wright return as the Watcher, and will once again unleash the possibilities of the MCU multiverse. The series has been a big part of the franchise’s Multiverse Saga, using the conceit to explore alternate versions of various characters and events. Season 3 will continue this trend, bring in characters such as Iron Heart, Shang-Chi, Monica Rambeau, Moon Knight, White Vision, and more.

What If…? Season 3 Will Continue To Bring the X-Men Into the MCU

What If…? Season 3 will also bring one of the most iconic members of The X-Men into the MCU fray, with Ororo Munroe a.k.a. Storm all set to feature. Not only will Storm play a part in the multiversal shenanigans (and thus continue the gradual introduction of the X-Men into the MCU), she will also prove herself worthy by wielding Mjölnir, Thor’s enchanted hammer.

The upcoming live-action sequels Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will bring the Multiverse Saga to an end, with What If…? Season 3 now confirmed to be the final chapter in the MCU series, concluding the Watcher’s storyline and arc. As Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, previously revealed:

“[It] feels like the completion of a trilogy. It goes beyond the first two seasons in its exploration of the multiverse, and it pulls in characters that are very unexpected, and has what I think is an extremely moving and fulfilling culmination for the Watcher.”

What If…? director Bryan Andrews, meanwhile, has promised that the final chapter will take some “big swings.”

“We can take big swings. The wilder What If…? got, it seems the more the audience responds. He said to expect “some Western stuff going on, some stompy robot stuff going on…”

Following the establishment of the multiverse in the first-season finale of Loki, What If…? explores various alternate timelines across the multiverse in which major moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films occur differently, as observed by the Watcher. In the second season, following the formation of the Guardians of the Multiverse, the Watcher continues to explore more strange worlds, meeting new heroes and keeping the multiverse safe.
