Kelly Clarkson Wins Big at the Daytime Emmy Awards

Kelly Clarkson is the new queen of daytime television after winning big at the Daytime Emmy Awards. On Friday evening, the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony took place, honoring the best daytime programs and television personalities. Both Clarkson and her show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, were honored with award wins for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host and Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show, respectively.

For the Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host category, Clarkson won for hosting The Kelly Clarkson Show. The other nominees were Drew Barrymore for The Drew Barrymore Show; Sean Evans for Hot Ones, First We Feast; Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager for Today Show with Hoda & Jenna; and Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest for Live with Kelly and Ryan. It’s the second time Clarkson won the award following her win in the same category last year.

Similarly, The Kelly Clarkson Show took the win for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show. This category’s other nominees included The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Drew Barrymore Show, and Today Show with Hoda & Jenna. The show also won the Outstanding Live and Direct-to-Tape Sound Mixing award, and received additional nominations in the categories of Outstanding Original Song, Outstanding Lighting Direction, and Outstanding Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design.

The Kelly Clarkson Show premiered in the fall of 2019 and has already become one of daytime TV’s most popular programs. Last year, for its first year on the air, the show won three Daytime Emmy Awards, including the Outstanding Talk Show Host win for Clarkson. It was nominated for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show as well, though The Ellen DeGeneres Show took the honors at the ceremony.

NBC already knew about the potential of The Kelly Clarkson Show prior to these award wins. In May, it was announced that the talk show is set to take over the timeslot of The Ellen DeGeneres Show after 19 seasons for the latter when Ellen ends in 2022. As there has been a lot of controversy over Ellen and the treatment of guests and employees backstage, the reception to Clarkson filling in as the new face of daytime television has been very well-received.

“These are remarkable achievements for a talk show in its second season. We look forward to Ellen DeGeneres’ 19th season paired with Kelly Clarkson for what is sure to be a blockbuster year,” said Valari Staab, president of NBCUniversal Local, in a statement at the time. “By 2022, The Kelly Clarkson Show will be the star of our daytime entertainment schedules and an asset to our early afternoon newscasts.”

Tracie Wilson, executive vp, NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, added: “The Kelly Clarkson Show is one of the most optimistic success stories in first-run syndication. It is a treasured part of NBCUniversal Syndication Studios offering and we are proud to partner with the NBC Owned Television Stations group to continue the show’s success. Kelly and our entire production team put their heart, intent and incredible passion into making a show that resonates with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. We’re working on some big plans for season three and are looking forward to becoming the premier show in daytime for years to come.”

Congratulations to Clarkson for her Daytime Emmy Award wins along with her new timeslot for 2022. You can see the full list of the award winners at the event by visiting the official website for the Daytime Emmy Awards.
