Sarah Michelle Gellar Thinks Buffy Reboot Could ‘Share the Power Among Women’

Sarah Michelle Gellar may now be dealing with werewolves on Paramount+’s Wolfpack, but she was slaying vampires long before. Gellar famously portrayed Buffy Summers, from 1997 to 2003, on the beloved television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The role earned Gellar a Golden Globe Award nomination and cemented her place as a pop culture icon. However, in recent years, reports have surfaced of issues behind the scenes of the hit series, with cast and crew speaking out against series creator Joss Whedon. Gellar has commented about working in a toxic environment where women were “pitted against each other.” In a new interview with Variety, Gellar says that despite on-set issues, she remembers the series “fondly” and discusses her feelings on a Buffy reboot.

“I think that the way we left the show was set up for that. There was a reason why the idea was that instead of ‘into one generation there is one Slayer’ why not share the power among women. That’s one of the biggest issues with women is, we so often don’t support the other women around us. And so I think it’s a perfect way to tell the story through a modern lens,” she says. “I just don’t think it should be me because of those inevitable comparisons. But I think that if somebody has a way in through those other Slayers – like, we left that there for a reason. We could have just ended it but we didn’t. So I’m all for it, if someone has that story, I just don’t think I’m the person that’s – no, let me rephrase that. I know I’m not the person to tell that story.”

While a continuation of the vampire slayer storyline may have her blessing, Gellar tells the publication she would want no part of it. She echoes the same sentiment for Cruel Intentions. Gellar starred in the 1999 film that is being rebooted as a television series. Gellar believes that her part in that reboot would only drive comparison to the original film and that the series should “get a chance to sand on [its] own.”

According to Gellar, she is currently in talks to return for the second season of the Teen Wolf spin-off Wolf Pack. She stars on the series as an Arson investigator looking into a forest fire. Gellar also serves as an executive producer on the series. Wolf Pack is available to stream on Paramount+.

Gellar’s other notable credits include roles in I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Grudge, and, most recently, Do Revenge. On television, she’s appeared on Sex and the City, Ringer, Robot Chicken, and The Crazy Ones, among others.
