Netflix’s Sabrina Will Continue as a Comic, Kiernan Shipka to Eventually Return in a Revival

Don’t despair, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will continue with a comic book series set after the events of the Netflix show, and creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is planning for it to tie into a future revival. Between 2018 and 2020, Netflix debuted what was technically two seasons told in four separate chapters. The final episodes dropped on New Year’s Eve last year following the news that Netflix had officially cancelled the series.

Many fans were unhappy to see the series come to an end when it did, feeling that there was still a lot of story left to tell with Kiernan Shipka’s incarnation of the Archie Comics character. The good news is that a new comic book series, The Occult World of Sabrina, picks up from where the Netflix show left off. It might not be the same as new episodes of the Netflix show, but it does offer an official continuation of the story that fans otherwise wouldn’t be getting.

In a new interview with Deadline, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke about the motivation behind developing the comic book series. He boldly claimed that Sabrina will be back someday with Shipka back in the role, but until then, he wanted to keep the story going with an official comic book spinoff. From the interview:

“About two months ago, I reached out to [Archie Comics CEO/publisher] Jon Goldwater and told him that Sabrina is going to eventually come back. We’re going to find a way to continue with Kiernan, but in the meantime, what if we bring back the comic book? He agreed.”

Aguirre-Sacasa went on to explain the plan to keep the franchise hot with two comic book series. One will pick up from the original comic book timeline while the other continues from the events of the Netflix show. As the writer explains, he has to legally wait two years before he can bring back the character elsewhere, but the hope is to bring back Kiernan Shipka for either a continuation movie or TV series. From the interview:

“We’re always thinking in those ways. There’s a hold on the character now, I think for two years, and that window has already started. My plans are to work on the comics and build up that library with the hopes that one day we can do a stand-alone movie or hopefully bring back the series. I feel like right now this is like the research and development stage of the next iteration of Sabrina. I was really bummed that the fans weren’t able to see Sabrina reunited with her family and friends which was the heart of the show. But I’m hopeful that with different circumstances in the future, we’ll be able to do a live-action Sabrina to continue.”

The Occult World of Sabrina is set to arrive later this year, but an official release date hasn’t yet been announced. Meanwhile, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina No. 9 with Aguirre-Sacasa at the helm will be released on Oct. 13. For now, you can stream every episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the TV series on Netflix, and you can read the full interview with Aguirre-Sacasa at Deadline.
