The Conners Season 4 Brings in Seinfeld Star Jason Alexander to Play a Pastor

Jason Alexander has just lined up his next television role. Best known for his main role as George Costanza on the popular sitcom Seinfeld, Alexander has just been cast for a guest spot in the upcoming fourth season of The Conners, a modern Roseanne spinoff series. It can be seen as the collision of worlds given how Seinfeld and Roseanne were both among TV’s most popular programs during the 1990s.

In The Conners, Jason Alexander will appear in two episodes as Pastor Phil. The character is described as an “unconventional cleric with a rebel past. He uses humor and unflinching honesty to spread the good word.” Pastor Phil will first appear as a speaker at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where Becky (Lecy Goranson) and Darlene (Sara Gilbert) arrive looking for spiritual guidance.

For his performance as George Costanza, Alexander earned six Emmy nominations, four Golden Globe nominations, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Actor in a TV Comedy. Still working frequently, Alexander’s recent TV credits include roles in shows like Young Sheldon, The Orville, and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel. He also appeared as himself in 2019’s Mad About You special, another coming together of 1990s sitcom worlds.

Alexander is the latest of several big names from 1990s pop culture to appear on The Conners. Previous episodes have featured special appearances from stars like Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown), Fred Savage (The Wonder Years), and Brian Austin Green (Beverly Hills, 90210), while Katey Sagal (Married… with Children) appears in a recurring role. In other words, Alexander will be in some good company.

The Conners, a Roseanne spinoff, doesn’t feature Roseanne Barr, as her character was killed off prior to the start of the series. Picking up with the Conner family dealing with the aftermath of Roseanne’s death, the sitcom stars John Goodman as Dan, Sara Gilbert as Darlene, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie, Lecy Goranson as Becky, Michael Fishman as D.J., Emma Kenney as Harris, and Maya Lynne Robinson as Geena.

“Not only do we have actors that can pull off more nuanced material than you might normally see in the sitcom genre, but we also have an audience that will go with us on a more complicated journey,” producer Dave Caplan previously said of the third season getting so dark. This also suggests things won’t be all rosy in season 4, either.

Producer Bruce Rasmussen added: “Part of the Conners’ journey is also the journey of trying to keep their heads above water economically. And like a lot of families in America, the pandemic hit families, especially families that didn’t have much of a safety net. It would’ve been easier, certainly, to pretend that we were a show that took place in the future or the past. But we felt like we couldn’t walk away from it.”

Season 4 of The Conners will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 9 p.m. on ABC. Meanwhile, fans of Seinfeld can revisit Alexander’s days as George Costanza by streaming the classic series when it arrives on Netflix in September. This news comes to us from Variety.
