The second season is beginning soon, and each one is worth the watch for Goldblum’s wonderment and enthusiasm for knowledge. The official synopsis for the National Geographic docu-series reads “Through the prism of Jeff Goldblum’s always inquisitive and highly entertaining mind, nothing is as it seems in this new series. Each episode is centered around something we all love – like sneakers or ice cream – as Jeff pulls the thread on these deceptively familiar objects and unravels a wonderful world of astonishing connections, fascinating science and history, amazing people, and a whole lot of surprising big ideas and insights.”
The first season covers an assortment of topics from tattoos and sneakers to denim and gaming. You learn about all sorts of things you thought you already had pegged, and you are introduced to new concepts you might not have ever considered. Jeff Goldblum, with over four decades in the biz, thinks he’s finally hitting his stride.
“My acting teacher Sandy Meisner said it takes 20 years to call yourself an actor, and a lifetime of being a student. I think I’m on the brink of my best work acting-wise and music-wise. I play [piano] every day. The more I learn, the more I see of what I need to learn. Even simple things. Sometimes I go, “You know, I think I’m brushing my teeth better than I ever have.”
Speaking of some of his food-centered shows, he shares, “For the ice cream episode, I went to an ice cream social on an aircraft carrier. We did an episode on barbecue, and there’s a place that farms crickets as an alternative protein. We barbecued some, and that was surprising.”
He describes the show’s lesson as, “That you have to keep learning. The reason time seems to go so slowly when you’re young is because of a strange makeup of our brains whereby if we’re learning a lot every day, it slows time down. Whereas if you’re going through the motions or you’re learning less, time speeds up on you. So be present, be spontaneous. Enjoy the moment, enjoy yourself and learn.”
When asked is he has any retirement plans, he responds, ” ! don’t really think about it. For as long as I can see ahead of me, I’m going to contribute whatever I can and do something very challenging. I don’t know how I’ll feel in a while, but right now I have more of an appetite than ever to do more and more.”
The man seems to have it all figured out, and what he doesn’t, he’s learning along with rest of us on The World According to Jeff Goldblum Catch the season 2 premiere on Disney+ November 12.
