Shawnee Smith in Talks to Return for Saw 10

Shawnee Smith in Talks to Return for Saw 10

As the next Saw sequel comes together, more word has come in that there will be more than one familiar face fans might expect to see. Previously, it was announced that Tobin Bell would be returning to the franchise to reprise his role in Saw 10 as John Kramer, aka the infamous “Jigsaw Killer.” Now, Deadline reports that Shawnee Smith, who appeared in multiple prior installments of the movie series, is also in talks to return as Amanda Young, a Jigsaw victim-turned-accomplice.

Presumably, as with Bell’s Jigsaw, Smith’s return as Amanda would be for a flashback sequence. The Amanda character has been dead since Saw III, though Smith would later reprise the role for Saw VI in this way. She has also been referenced multiple times throughout the series, maintaining a presence in Saw that should result in many fans feeling happy about the prospect of seeing new footage with Smith back as Amanda. Given that Bell is also returning, it seems probable the two characters will be sharing the screen at some point.

Other cast members, according to the report, include Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman), and Michael Beach (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story). Another Saw veteran, Kevin Greuter, is also back in the director’s chair after previously editing the first five movies along with Jigsaw and helming Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter. Mark Burg and Oren Koules are producing. Executive producers include Daniel J. Heffner, Ketura Kestin, and James Wan.

The Saw Franchise Continues

Lionsgate

Jigsaw might be long dead, but the Saw franchise has continued on without him. In addition to Saw 10, there are also plans to further expand the franchise with a television series adaptation. In development at Lionsgate TV, the series will be less focused on Jigsaw and serve more as a follow-up to the events of Spiral, the sequel that starred Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson that was released in 2021.

“We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation,” Lionsgate TV chairman Kevin Beggs has been quoted as saying of the Saw show.

Spiral director Darren Lynn Bousman has also said that his hope is to see the franchise turn more into an expansive cinematic universe set in its own Saw world. That means separate sequels for the main Saw series as well as Spiral, and the planned TV show.

“I think you’ll be seeing the Marvelverse of the Saw franchise, where there are different storylines taking place,” he said. “And I think that that’s what it’s going to be. It’ll exist in the same universe, and there will be different storylines taking place.”

Saw 10 will be released in movie theaters on Oct. 27, 2023.
