The Little Mermaid Remake Has Been Rated PG

Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid has gotten its official rating. The film has been rated PG for “action/peril and some scary images,” per FilmRatings.com. Of course, it’s not exactly a surprise for the movie to be given this rating, as it’s a Disney movie that needs to be appropriate for young children. But the switch to live-action did result in the new Little Mermaid going up a step higher compared to the animated versions of Ariel’s adventures at Disney, as the previous movies were rated G.

Halle Bailey plays Ariel in the new film, with her casting generating a lot of discussion online. While there have been some social media complaints from fans of the Disney cartoon unhappy about the change in the fictional mermaid’s skin color, others have been sold on Bailey in the role after seeing her sing “Part of Your World” in a teaser trailer. Bailey recently said how she’s no longer nervous about playing the high-pressure part.

“I don’t feel pressure anymore,” she told E! News. “I think that before I started filming, I did feel some nerves naturally because the film is important to so many people.”

Rob Marshall directs the film using a screenplay by David Magee and Jane Goldman. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken provide new music for the film. Along with Bailey, the cast includes Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Art Malik as Grimsby, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid Could Be Adapted as a More Mature Film

Disney

At one point, before Disney had begun work on their own remake of their animated version, Sofia Coppola was planning to develop a more mature take on The Little Mermaid. An amusing trailer at Funny or Die imagining the concept (and featuring Dahmer star Evan Peters) was released in 2014 amid reports that Coppola was pursuing the project. She wound up parting ways with the film the following year and that version of The Little Mermaid fizzled out in development hell. Had it been made, however, it could have been the R-rated version of the story.

“It wasn’t the Disney version, it was actually the original fairy tale, which is much darker,” Coppola later recalled in 2017, via IndieWire. “I thought it would be fun to do a fairy tale, I’ve always loved fairy tales, so I was curious about doing that.”

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid will premiere in theaters on May 26, 2023. You can watch a previously released teaser below.
