  • Debra Jo Rupp Isn’t a Fan of Kitty Forman’s Trademark Laugh

Debra Jo Rupp says she “got stuck” with the laugh after doing it in the pilot for That ’70s Show.

Netflix

After previously playing Kitty Forman for That ’70s Show, Debra Jo Rupp is back in the role for Netflix’s spinoff series That ’90s Show. Joined by Kurtwood Smith as Red Forman, the two are back in the same old house in Point Place, Wisconsin, but with an all-new group of youths hanging out in their basement. While some things are different, others haven’t changed at all, and the latter would include the trademark laugh often uttered by Kitty.

Speaking about her return to the role for Today, Rupp shared the story behind that unique laugh. She explained how she looked to her mother for inspiration when playing the Kitty Forman character after she was first cast for That ’70s Show. Because her mother had an obnoxious laugh, Rupp thought to have her character do one for the pilot, and it wound up sticking, become a staple for Kitty Forman ever since. From the interview:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Kitty became my mother on a good day. A really good day. She’s very cheerful. And she has a very obnoxious laugh, and I got stuck with it! I did it once in the pilot and I got stuck with it.”

After doing the laugh for the Today hosts, much to their delightment but not so much her own, Rupp went on to share how she really feels about the character’s laugh.

“It is SO annoying! It’s so annoying.”

That ’90s Show Brings Back Many Fan Favorites

Netflix

Rupp and Smith are among several fan favorites who can be seen in the new series. Most of the original starring cast members are coming back, which includes Mila Kunis as Jackie, Ashton Kutcher as Kelso, Topher Grace as Eric, Laura Prepon as Donna, and Wilmer Valderrama as Fez. Other familiar faces will also appear such as Tommy Chong as Leo and Don Stark as Bob Pinciotti. Danny Masterson’s Hyde is noticably absent, most likely due to the actor’s pending criminal trial.

That ’90s Show will also introduce a new cast that features Callie Haverda as Leia Forman, Red and Kitty’s granddaughter; Ashley Aufderheide as teen rebel Gwen; Mace Coronel as Jay Kelso, an aspiring filmmaker and son of Kelso and Jackie; Maxwell Acee Donovan as Nate, Gwen’s fun-loving brother; Reyn Doi as Ozzie, an openly gay friend; and Sam Morelos as Nikki, Nate’s girlfriend.

That ’90s Show premieres on Netflix on Jan. 19, 2023. You can check out a full trailer for the series below.
