The Harry Potter franchise is in the midst of getting rebooted, as it will be reimagined as an episodic series for HBO Max (which is soon to be rebranded as simply Max). As it’s still in its early stages, the project hasn’t yet gotten to casting, and no actors have yet been attached to any of the roles. Theoretically, the series could be linked to the movies in an interesting way if Joseph Fiennes were to play the new Voldemort, as the actor’s brother, Ralph Fiennes, previously played the iconic antagonist on the big screen.
This is a possibility that was floated to Joseph Fiennes during a new interview with ComicBook.com. When asked if he’d be up for joining the Harry Potter series, Fiennes showed some trepidation, at first joking about auditioning for the role before admitting that he doesn’t really know. Fiennes suggests that it still may be a little too soon to reboot Harry Potter, but at the same time, he says it’s “great” that it’s happening. As the actor puts it:

“You know I’m trying to find that piece of makeup and that eye thing again, maybe I need that for an audition. I don’t know. I just heard that recently and it’s great. It feels like it was only yesterday. I don’t know why we have to reinvent everything. But, I guess this is what happens.”
Even if the reboot’s happening sooner than expected, the change in format, which will allow each book to be more thoroughly explored, may help the series feel different enough from the feature films. Fiennes agrees that the new format will open more doors creatively, finding the whole thing to be “exciting” ultimately.
“The structure of television now It’s so brilliant and sophisticated, and the map is just wide open. So, you’re right, it allows that material to be reexamined and take the viewers in a different direction or open up pockets that they wouldn’t have imagined they would have the time to see in a cinema. So I think, actually, television’s really exciting in that way.”

Who Will Be the New Voldemort?
Warner Bros. Pictures
We’ll have to wait and see who will end up getting cast to see who plays who with the Harry Potter series. One person what we know will be involved in Harry Potter novel series author J.K. Rowling, who will be developing the series in partnership with Warner Bros. Television. When the series was officially announced, Rowling also noted in a statement that switching to the small screen was a great way to approach the reboot. Each season will adapt one Harry Potter book, and that allows for more hours to be allotted for the adaptation rather than trying to cram everything into one feature-length film.
“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” Rowling said.
A release date hasn’t yet been announced for the Harry Potter series.
