Stranger Things Will Use ‘All the Tools Available’ to Tackle the Aging Cast

Summary

  • The final season of Stranger Things is delayed due to a conflict between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP, but producer Shawn Levy isn’t worried about the passing of time.
  • The aging of the young stars has always been a conflict for the series, but the makeup team and ’80s costumes will help maintain their iconic Hawkins characters.
  • Stranger Things is a priority for Netflix and everyone involved in the show is eager to get back to work, but a fair and equitable deal must be made before production can resume.

The final season of Stranger Things seems increasingly distant. Although the writers have already returned to work on the final episodes of the hit Netflix series, filming still does not have a start date and will depend on the conflict between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP coming to an end. However, producer Shawn Levy isn’t worried about the passing of time. The aging of its young stars is a conflict that has always been present for the series, and something that many fans have pointed out since the premiere of the second season in 2017, when only a little over a year had passed since the first one. This conflict became increasingly evident, since the third season only arrived in 2019, and the fourth one in 2022, with most of the actors now approaching adulthood.

Therefore, the delay of the fifth and final season of the show is a concern for everyone. Except for Shawn Levy. In an interview with Variety, the producer spoke about the situation, showing absolute confidence in the series’ makeup team:

“We’ve already watched the cast of our show grow up in the public eye, and between 12 and 22, every human being changes profoundly. This passage of time is definitely not helping. That being said, our hair and makeup and wardrobe department are pretty exceptional, using costumes and wigs and makeup. The ’80s are also our friends in returning these young adult actors to their iconic Hawkins characters. So we’re going to use all the all the tools available to us. And I know our cast is as eager to get back to work as the rest of us.”

Is Stranger Things a Priority for Netflix Amid Ongoing Strikes?

Netflix

There is no doubt that the series created by the Duffer brothers has become an emblem for the streaming platform. It is currently one of the oldest original productions on the service, and the announcement of its ending was of great impact for fans and Netflix subscribers, so much so that they have already confirmed that there will be new stories within the same universe to maintain the audience.

However, how important is Stranger Things to the company? Levy is not sure if he can answer, but he recognizes the power that the story has and that it is a priority for the entire team behind the show to be able to return to work on the final season:

“I can’t speak to how important “Stranger Things” is to Netflix in the strike talks, and I am not inclined to speak on their behalf. I can say with confidence I think every actor, director, producer, writer and crew member want to get back to work. I think that “Stranger Things” is a true flag-bearing franchise for Netflix’s brand, and everyone there is also hungry to make the next season. However, none of that can happen unless there is a fair and equitable deal made. I’m saying a small prayer that I will already be back at work once this piece runs.”

The first four seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream on Netflix, with work on the fifth and final season now underway following the end of the writers’ strike.
