Sky coach: Carter’s foul on Clark inappropriate

Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon voiced her displeasure with guard Chennedy Carter after her flagrant foul on Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

“Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game. She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are,” Weatherspoon said in a statement released on social media Monday.

“Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”

The incident occurred late in the third quarter of the Fever’s 71-70 win on Saturday. Carter was called for a common foul after she checked Clark to the ground while the former Iowa star was waiting for an inbound pass.

The WNBA reviewed the play and upgraded the call to a flagrant 1 on Sunday.

Carter refused to answer questions about the incident in her postgame press conference Saturday, saying “I ain’t answering no Caitlin Clark questions.”

When reporters tried to ask follow-up questions, Weatherspoon interjected, saying: “That’s enough. We’re good.”

The WNBA also fined rookie Angel Reese $1,000 for not making herself available to the media after the loss Saturday. Chicago was also given a $5,000 punishment for failing to ensure their players complied with WNBA policies, the league announced.

Carter scored a game-high 19 points off the bench against Indiana, while Clark finished with 11 points and six assists on 4-of-11 from the field.

The two squads will meet again on June 16 in Indiana.
