I hope this haunts you

Kate Winslet has reflected on the harm the media caused her by commenting on her weight when she was younger.

Winslet appeared on the show 60 Minutes to promote her new film Lee, which marks her first project that she has both starred in and produced. At point in the interview, she discussed the impact of tabloids making cruel comments about her weight when she rose to popularity – and what happened when she confronted them.

“It’s absolutely appalling. What kind of a person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?” she said.

When asked if she’d ever confronted them, Winslet sais: “I did. I let them have it. I said ‘I hope this haunts you’.”

Becoming tearful, she added: “It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me, it was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific. It was really bad.”

In August, Winslet mentioned that she was told to hide her “belly rolls” during the filming of Lee and she refused.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Titanic star said that a crew member on the film’s set made the comment during a scene in which she wears a bathing suit.

“There’s a bit where Lee’s sitting on a bench in a bikini,” she said. “And one of the crew came up between takes and said, ‘You might want to sit up straighter’. So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life! It was deliberate, you know?”

In other Winslet news, she recently recalled the “messy” experience of kissing Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, admitting it “was not all it’s cracked up to be”.

“We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me,” she said.

The film’s director James Cameron also recently dismissed rumours of a rift between himself and Winslet.

The actor’s show Mare Of Easttown, meanwhile, may be getting a second season soon, with executives recently revealing they might “start thinking of building something”.
