Dexter Teaser Trailer Arrives and It’s Chilling

A new teaser has been released for Dexter ahead of its upcoming return to Showtime. Bringing back Michael C. Hall as the vigilante serial killer, the limited series will basically serve as the ninth season of the popular TV series. In the new teaser, we can see an axe against a stump in the dead of winter, picking up from where we last saw Dexter in season 8. You can watch the clip below.

“There really is nothing like getting back to nature… my nature,” Dexter can be heard saying in the teaser.

Despite its popularity during its original run, Dexter had drawn a lot of criticism over its controversial ending. Giving the fans a more satisfactory conclusion to the story was one of the factors in bringing the series back for another season years later. After the revival series was announced last year, showrunner Clyde Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast that this was a good chance to give the series a “second finale.”

“10 years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage,” Phillips said. “In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that.”

Noting how the new episodes won’t undo the original series finale, Phillips added: “This is an opportunity to make that right, but that’s not why we’re doing it. We’re doing this because there is such a hunger for Dexter out there. We’re not undoing anything. We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years.”

Clyde Phillips will serve as showrunner for the series with Michael C. Hall reprising the role of Dexter Morgan. The cast also includes Clancy Brown as Kurt Caldwell, the primary villain of the new season, with some of the other cast members including David Magidoff, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, and Jack Alcott.

Developed by James Manos Jr., Dexter follows a forensic technician who lives a double life as a vigilante serial killer. The series aired for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013, and during its run, it was one of the most popular shows on television, earning 24 Primetime Emmy Award nominations with Hall and John Lithgow winning Golden Globes for season 4. Its series finale even set the record for the largest overall audience in Showtime’s history, even if fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the ending.

A logline for the series revival reads: “Set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami.” Showtime hasn’t yet set an official premiere date for theDexter revival, but it’s expected to be given a Fall 2021 release.
