This year marks the 20th anniversary of Batman Begins and the 25th anniversary of Memento. The common denominator is, you guessed it, Christopher Nolan. During his incredible career so far, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has become known as a director who likes to collaborate with the same actors on multiple projects, even those in supporting roles. As well as the likes of Michael Caine (The Prestige, Inception, Batman Begins), Kenneth Branagh (Tenet, Oppenheimer) and Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises), Sons of Anarchy star Mark Boone Junior is another star to have worked with Nolan on more than one occasion.
MovieWeb recently caught up with the actor amid the release of his new film, I’m Beginning to See the Light. Having starred in both of Nolan’s movies celebrating a milestone birthday this year, Boone took a moment to reflect on working with a master of the craft.
“Christopher Nolan is just an incredibly hardworking person who is very well prepared and, you know, gets a lot out of people. Christopher and his wife have pulled off just a massive coup in moviemaking… He’s really smart… He’s as communicative as he needs to be… They both carry these things on their backs, like, in a big way.”
Boone also described a striking experience tied to Batman Begins, in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary:
“I remember running into him after Batman Begins, like, I don’t know, three months later or something. I ran into [him and his wife] on the Disney lot, and they were just gaunt humans. I mean, they were just so tired. You could tell that they had just put so much into this at that point, and they just keep doing it. It’s pretty unbelievable.”
Boone Is Creating an “Impactful Scenario” in His New Movie

Two decades later, Boone continues to steal scenes in movies big and small, his latest being the thought-provoking indie film I’m Beginning to See the Light. It’s directed by Konstantin Khudyakov, who is 86 years old and has been making movies in Eastern Europe for more than 40 years. “This is his first movie out of Russia, so there was a translator there the the whole time,” Boone told us. “But he gave me so much, like, so quickly in, like, you know, 10 minutes before — because I didn’t meet him before or talk to him or anything before getting to set. And he just opened up, like, a big world for me, like, immediately.”
Boone’s unnamed role in his new film is limited but memorable, as his burly character tries to break into the lighthouse managed by protagonist Ezra (Jack Huston) to try and reach the top and jump — for the sake of taking his own life. Once the authorities drag him down to safety, Boone delivers a manic monologue to Huston’s troubled character about the meaning of life, not long after having fought Ezra in order to break into the lighthouse itself. Says Boone:
“I felt that it did when I did [the monologue], there was some kind of actual communication. And, you know, we had had this fight too, you know, so we all obviously had, you know, close contact… I hit him in the head with a lock, and [my character] in a very short time makes a pretty impactful scenario, which was, you know, very, very fun to do.”
