Hulu will change forever next year, and it’s all due to Disney’s more popular streaming platform, Disney+. After acquiring full ownership of Hulu earlier this year, the company has decided to combine its streaming efforts into one new app. Now, Hulu and Disney+ will live under one home, but it’s the latter that will show up on your home entertainment devices.
Disney has announced that Hulu’s standalone streaming platform will be shut down in favor of a unified experience on a new version of Disney+. Users will still be able to purchase a Hulu subscription, but it will be through the Disney+ app. Of course, a combo deal for both streamers will likely be available as it is now. The Hulu platform will slowly be phased out until it is fully integrated into Disney+ sometime in 2026. Disney CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston stated the following about the major streaming announcement:
“Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+. This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app.”
Hulu’s integration into Disney+ is not a shocking development, as subscribers have been bracing for a potential shutdown ever since Disney+ rose to prominence. However, it appears that Disney+’s waning numbers last year could have sparked the latest announcement. Hulu is a strong streaming platform with a breadth of varied titles, most of which are not available on Disney+. The lack of diverse content on the latter, especially after a string of disappointing Marvel and Star Wars originals, may have prompted subscribers to opt for another, more varied platform, like Netflix or Prime Video.
