Ryan Reynolds Gives Deadpool 3 Script Update, But Denies Doctor Strange Cameo Despite New Images

Ryan Reynolds has had a lot of practice at teasing Deadpool fans, and it looks like now the Merc with a Mouth is joining the MCU that means a whole new level of opportunities to play with the theories and rumors that are being thrown around about the future of his R-rated comic book persona. He recently chatted to Variety about his new Netflix movie, The Adam Project, and was “ambushed” into addressing the current state of the Deadpool 3 script and those rumors of the character’s appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Since the Disney/Fox merger, there were questions about exactly what would become of Deadpool, and although many fans feared he could be watered down to a Disney-friendly PG-13 rating, Reynolds and Marvel boss Kevin Feige have previously alleviated worries in stating that Deadpool will be keeping his R-rating when he next returns in Deadpool 3. When asked by Variety’s Marc Malkin how the script for the new movie was going, Reynolds gave a small update, saying, “It’s coming along.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Prior to that, Reynolds was asked by Malkin to tell him “everything about his appearance in the Doctor Strange movie.” Reynolds laughed and after calling the question the “least covert trap,” he’d ever seen, went on to comment on the thing he believes he shouldn’t comment on. He said:

“I guess I’m not really supposed to say anything about that, but I’m really not in the movie. I could be an unreliable narrator, but I promise you I’m not in the movie.”

Many fans have called out Reynolds as “pulling a Garfield,” comparing his jokey dismissal as the kind of lie Andrew Garfield spent months telling about his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Whether Reynolds is telling the truth or not is something everyone will have to make their own mind up about. You can judge yourself from the clip below.

Ryan Reynolds Denial of His Doctor Strange Involvement is Going To Be This Year’s No Way Home Debate

20th Century Fox/Marvel Studios

For much of last year, every single person who interviewed Andrew Garfield asked the Tick, Tick…Boom! star the same question and received the same categorical answer: Was he in Spider-Man: No Way Home to the repeated response of “No.” However, from around the summer, images circulated showing Garfield in his Spider-Man outfit against a blue screen background, and later his arm was left in a shot during the trailer in which he and Tobey Maguire had been sneakily removed. Now it seems that history is about to repeat itself with Ryan Reynolds and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As Reynolds denied his involvement in the movie, grainy images appearing to show Deadpool in a containment cell that are allegedly from the upcoming film surfaced on the internet, suggesting that we are in for a long couple of months until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally arrives and puts all of this beyond doubt.

Ryan Reynolds can be seen in the time-traveling movie The Adam Project on Netflix from March 11th.
