Alright Scream 7, you already had my attention, but now you REALLY have my attention with this latest bit of casting news. Not sure if they’re doing something out of the box meta here, retconning something from a previous installment, or if this character is back from the dead. But someone just joined the cast of the seventh installment, and they’ve already been a part of the Scream universe, and they presumably didn’t make it out alive.
Per Deadline, Scott Foley has officially joined the cast of Scream 7. This is interesting news because the former Felicity star already has a connection to the franchise, although it appeared that his character bit the dust. Foley previously appeared in Scream 3 as Roman Bridger, a character at first introduced as the filmmaker who was directing the film within a film, Stab 3, which was based on the life of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and the events in Woodsboro. At first glance, he’s just a frustrated director who is watching his film fall apart when the real Ghostface killings begin ruining his production.
Alright folks, here comes a nearly 25-year-old spoiler alert (the film hits the milestone next month): by the film’s climax, Roman is revealed to be Sidney’s half-brother who was a product of sexual assault that their mother endured when she was an actress in Hollywood. He’s revealed to be the Ghostface killer in the third installment and the film even went so far as to reveal that he orchestrated lighting the fuse that made Billy (Skeet Ulrich) begin stalking Sidney in the first film. It all got very Scooby-Doo mystery complicated but, needless to say, Roman was shot in the head by Dewey (David Arquette), so he seemed pretty much dead by the end of the film.

Foley joins a cast that continues to grow with each passing day for the seventh Scream installment. Campbell and Courteney Cox are back as the veterans of the franchise, while 2022’s Scream and Scream VI co-stars Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are also returning. The new faces set to be would-be victims or killers include Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.

Kevin Williamson, who created the franchise back in 1996, is in the director’s chair on this one and the addition of Foley is interesting because Williamson has not been shy regarding his feelings about Scream 3. The Teaching Mrs. Tingle director didn’t write the third film as duties were passed on to Ehren Kruger (The Ring) due to Williamson’s other commitments at the time. While he did mention he thought the film had moments and characters he enjoyed (he was a big fan of Parker Posey’s Jennifer Jolie), he felt the third film was too jokey and didn’t balance the satire with horror in equal measure. Some believe this is why the deal with Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed Detective Mark Kincaid in the third film, didn’t work out. But if he brings Foley into the fold, maybe part of Scream 3 is canon.
Scream 7 is currently shooting in Atlanta and all signs point to Williamson wanting to bring the franchise’s focus back to Sidney, who will have at least one child in the film (played by May). There are rumors that she may have more than one child in the film. The previous installments were received positively by fans, but the recent well-documented debacle that took place following Scream VI and the development of this did leave a sour taste in some people’s mouths. A lot of the moves made now seem to be trying to rectify that, at least a little bit.
