Live PD Returns to Television as On Patrol: Live

The reality television series Live PD is making a return, according to reports from Deadline. The show will be making its first appearance since June 2020, with a few twists. First, the series will be going through a rebranding of sorts, with a new network hosting the program. Live PD is now On Patrol: Live, premiering on Reelz. The setup will be the same as its predecessor, with new episodes debuting on Friday and Saturday night, from 9 pm to 12 am ET. Dan Abrams will be returning to host. Reelz says the series will document in real-time the everyday work of police officers on patrol from departments across the United States.

Live PD was canceled by A&E and MGM’s Big Fish Entertainment in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the protests that ensued that summer. A statement made by the network at the time said: “This is a critical time in our nation’s history and we have made the decision to cease production on Live PD. Going forward, we will determine if there is a clear pathway to tell the stories of both the community and the police officers whose role it is to serve them. And with that, we will be meeting with the community and civil rights leaders as well as police departments.”

What Changes Are Being Made in On Patrol: Live?

A&E

Sgt. Sean “Sticks” Larkin, retired Tulsa Police Department lieutenant, and Deputy Sheriff Curtis Wilson, Division Commander with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, will join Abrams. The trio will discuss situations encountered in the show and provide minute-by-minute commentary, offering personal insight into the processes and strategies used by law enforcement.

In a change for the series, On Patrol: Live will offer Citizen Ride-Alongs as well, allowing local residents to experience first-hand what officers go through on a day-to-day basis. In addition, they will be able to share their stories with Abrams and the officers in the studio following their ride-along. This will hopefully help bridge the gap between communities and officers and create a sense of understanding between the two. Abrams recently commented on his excitement about returning to the series:

“Law enforcement is front and center in the national discussion, and our hope is that showing the work of police officers in a live format will provide viewers with direct access to the work they do. I’m thrilled our team is finally back together and excited that REELZ has committed to making this show front and center on their network.”

Although there is no official release date for On Patrol: Live, the series is expected to begin airing sometime this summer.
