The upcoming third season of The White Lotus has just received immense praise from one of its returning stars, Natasha Rothwell, who claims it’s the best season yet. Rothwell is one of few cast members from Mike White’s acclaimed seasonal anthology to reprise their role in another second season. Most famously, Jennifer Coolidge appeared as Tanya McQuoid in Season 1, set in Hawaii, then returned for the show’s second season, which saw a new set of holidaymakers travel to Italy. Rothwell also appeared in Season 1 as Belinda, an employee at the White Lotus resort, with aspirations of starting her own business.
Natasha Rothwell returns for Season 3, alongside newcomers Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, and more. Speaking to SiriusXM, Rothwell teased her return in the upcoming third season. The actress revealed that Season 3 is the most ambitious one yet in terms of scope. While Rothwell loved her time working on the show’s debut, she claims Season 3 is the best one yet. Rothwell explained:
“I think Season 1 was such a bubble, and such a special thing. So to see what Mike [White] has done with the series is incredible. And this final season, it’s bigger, it’s more insane. I personally, and again, I’m biased, but I think it’s the best one yet.”
The White Lotus Season 1 was shot during the COVID pandemic and aired on HBO in 2021. The series, created and written by Mike White, is regarded as one of the network’s greatest shows of all time — which is high praise considering the medium-defining programs HBO has produced. Introducing a new cast of characters each season (with the occasional returning face), past vacations have seen Sydney Sweeney, Jake Lacy, Theo James, Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Lukas Gage, Alexandra Daddario, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, and many more star-studded names jet off to the luxurious White Lotus branch of hotels.
The White Lotus Season 3 Explores “Spirituality”
Very few plot and character details have been revealed about The White Lotus’ third season, which takes the newest group of characters to Thailand. The culture of each season’s setting plays a major part in influencing the season’s overarching theme. Mike White has previously said that Season 3 is inspired by the country’s Buddhist roots, and will explore death and spirituality.
During the conversation, Natasha Rothwell expanded on how Season 3 delves into individual expressions of spirituality, especially through her character, Belinda.
In Season 1, Belinda was the resort’s massage specialist, and attempted to persuade Tonya into funding her new business venture. As Belinda travels to Thailand (it hasn’t been revealed whether her character will be on vacation, or employed by the country’s White Lotus branch), Rothwell said that Belinda’s beliefs and occupation fit in perfectly with the new season’s themes. She explained:
“It’s such a beautiful country. And Mike has said in the press that this season is focusing on spirituality, and exploration of that. Belinda being in the massage arts, I think that connection she had with Tanya [in] Season 1 was an expression of that. So I’m really excited for audiences to be on that journey with her in Season 3.”
