Ahead of the theatrical release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie next month, the cast members are putting their voice talents to use once again in celebration of “Mario Day.” Every year, on March 10th (aka Mar. 10, or MAR10), Nintendo fans celebrate the Super Mario Bros. franchise. In honor of the big day, the cast joined Jimmy Fallon and The Roots on The Tonight Show to sing along to the classic tune from the original video game. And by that, we mean they do their best to mimic the 8-bit video game music with their voices. You can see how it turns out by watching the video below.
Along with Fallon and The Roots, the video features Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Jack Black (Bowser), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), and Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong). Also featured are Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumuination founder Chris Meledandri, the producers of the film. Miyamoto even gets the opportunity to recreate the sounds of Mario losing a life.

Charles Martinet, who has been voicing Mario in the video games for decades, is voicing a mystery role in the new film that hasn’t yet been revealed. There has been a certain level of criticism over the casting, as many video game fans wanted Martinet to reprise the role of Mario, but the filmmakers have stood by Pratt’s casting and have promised that fans will be happy with the result.
“For us, it made total sense,” directors Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath told Total Film. “He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he’s perfect for it.”

Jelenic and Horvath direct using a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. By going with animation and featuring characters, items, and locations that look just as they do in the games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is clearly much more faithful to the source material than the prior live-action film released in 1993. This has created a lot of excitement from fans who can’t wait to see a more familiar version of Mario on the big screen. Even with the change in his voice. this could very well be the Super Mario Bros. film some fans have been waiting all their lives for.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in theaters on April 5, 2023.
