is going all out to promote his upcoming movie Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning, with a string of interviews lined up as the film’s theatrical debut approaches next weekend. However, just because he is finished filming one major action blockbuster, that doesn’t mean he is not already thinking about his next – or the next several. Fans are hoping that Top Gun 3
could be high on his agenda, and his new comments are very positive about the chances of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell taking flight again – but there is a catch.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Gives the Action Hero His Final Reckoning
Can Tom Cruise dominate the box office next weekend? Critics have had their say on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with the Australian show Today, Cruise was asked whether Top Gun 3 is currently in his thoughts, and in response he gave another hugely optimistic view that the high-flying franchise will return for a third movie. However, his candid reply also suggested that it may not be coming as quickly as fans would like. He said:
“Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick. There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, that was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Was the Legacy Movie to End All Legacy Movies
Tom Cruise waited a long time to deliver Top Gun Maverick, and the reason for that was not only due to the film’s long and laborious production schedule, which was impacted by various issues such as the COVID pandemic. If there is one thing that Tom Cruise doesn’t do, then that is to cut corners. For his Mission: Impossible movies and Top Gun: Maverick, that meant a lot of time spent doing dangerous stunts that no one else could probably pull off in the same way, and a lot of time getting them just right.
However, while the performance of his latest Mission: Impossible movie is yet to be seen, it paid off massively for Top Gun: Maverick. While many people expected the film to suffer for the amount of delays it had suffered, when it was finally released in 2022, the movie blasted its way to the top of the box office and then just kept going, becoming one of the most successful legacy sequels ever made.
Although there were initial doubts that there could ever be a Top Gun 3, the performance of the film didn’t take long to make people ask when the next one was coming out. For Cruise, there has to be a lot of planning and thought into how he can make it a worthy successor to one of the highest-grossing action movies of all time. That is something that can take a little time, and with so many other projects also vying for his attention, the question is, will it take too long for Cruise himself to play a part in it.
For now, the actor is fully focused on getting the world’s eyes on Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which hits cinemas on May 23 and is expected to deliver an opening weekend of somewhere in the region of $120 million. With the film needing to make substantially more to counter its reported $400 million budget, Cruise has his work cut out for him, but you still wouldn’t want to be the one betting against him.
