HBO Max Unveils Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin’s Spooky Trailer

HBO Max has unveiled the first trailer for Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, and the reimagination is bringing the mysterious A back for the ride. The new series will exist within the same universe as the popular series that ran until 2017. The eerie trailer gives us a sneak peek at the hooded and gloved A, destroying pictures of the new cast as a slowed-down piano version of the original show’s theme song plays in the background. You can watch the trailer below:

Judging by the trailer, the new series will likely lean towards more scares and creep-factor than the original series that starred Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Sasha Pieterse, and Janel Parrish. Although this is a new generation of Pretty Little Liars, series executive producer and writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the series will reference the original:

“We love the idea that Rosewood exists. There are Easter eggs throughout the season,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is executive produced and written by Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) and co-executive produced and written by Lindsay Calhoon Bring (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). The series is produced under Aguirre-Sacasa’s Muckle Man Productions banner, Alloy Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. I. Marlene King (known for developing the original series based on the book series by Sara Shepard), Michael Grassi, Caroline Baron, and Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo also serve as executive producers of the series.

While Pretty Little Liars produced two previous spin-offs (Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists), both were canceled after just one season. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is the newest addition to the Pretty Little Liars franchise and will debut three episodes on HBO Max on July 28. Two new episodes will follow on August 4 and 11, with the final three episodes airing on August 18.

An official description of the upcoming show reads:

“Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present-day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago…as well as their own. In the dark, coming-of-age, horror-tinged drama Original Sin, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand-new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.”

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin stars Bailee Madison (Good Witch) as Imogen, a “true survivor”; Chandler Kinney (Girl Meets World) as Tabby, horror movie fanatic; (Kally’s Mashup) as Noa, a track star that spent some time in a juvenile detention center; Zaria (Black-ish) as Faran, a ballerina with big dreams; and Malia Pyles (Baskets) as Minnie, who prefers virtual worlds to reality. The series cast also includes Mallory Bechtel (Hereditary), Sharon Leal (Dreamgirls), Elena Goode (As the World Turns), Tony Award-winning Lea Salonga, Eric Johnson (Rookie Blue), and Alex Aiono (Finding ‘Ohana).
