Stranger Things Season 5 is Set Entirely in Hawkins, Will Honor Eddie’s Sacrifice

SPOILER WARNING: There are MAJOR SPOILERS in this story for the final episodes of Stranger Things 4.

Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers have revealed a variety of details about the upcoming fifth and final season, including the setting, the team-ups, and the legacy of Eddie Munson. In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer revealed that the entirety of Stranger Things Season 5 will be set in Hawkins, and will return to “a lot” of the elements from Season 1.

“We wanna go back to a lot of the things we did in Season 1. A lot of the original groupings and pairings that we had in Season 1 – there’s something nice about coming full circle.”

After joking that the Stranger Things finale will be similar to the ending of The Lord of the Rings, describing it as “Return of the King-ish” and suggesting that it will have “like, eight endings,” Ross Duffer then sincerely revealed that they do already know how the world of Stranger Things will come to an end. Though they aren’t quite sure how they’ll get there yet.

“It’s dangerous as a writer to be writing hours and hours and not know where you’re going. I’d rather leave some of that middle journey vague and fuzzy.”

But the Duffer Brothers are not worried, with the siblings confident in their writing and storytelling process — something which has led them to create one of the most successful Netflix shows of all time.

“But so long as you know where that destination is, it sort of gives you that clarity. It’s like that lighthouse blinking in the distance … while a lot of Season 5 is actually pretty blurry, the last 30 minutes of it are pretty clear in our heads. So if we can make the journey entertaining, I think that we have an end that will hopefully satisfy. You can’t satisfy everyone, but the hope is that it’s something that feels right for this story.”

Stranger Things Season 5 Will Not Forget About Eddie

Netflix

By far the most triumphant moment of Stranger Things Season 4 sees Eddie Munson unleash his guitar playing skills in order to distract the hive mind of Vecna. Shredding Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” the moment finds Eddie becoming the hero he never thought he could be, making the ultimate sacrifice to save a town that despises him.

Eddie’s death (yes, sadly the brothers have confirmed that Eddie is definitely dead) will have “huge repercussions” amongst the surviving members of the Hawkins crew, according to The Duffer Brothers.

While we await more news regarding Stranger Things Season 5, The Duffer Brothers have now revealed that they will begin writing the final series soon. “We’re going to take a little vacation in July, and then we’re going to come back,” the siblings revealed recently. “I know that the writer’s room is going to start in that first week of August.”

Starring a large ensemble cast that includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Matthew Modine and Paul Reiser, Stranger Things Season 4 is now available on Netflix in its entirety.
