Mamma Mia 3 Get’s Promising Update From Director

While it took a long time for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again to bring a second round of Abba hits to the big screen, director Ol Parker has revealed that Mamma Mia 3 could be heading our way in the not-too-distant future. While discussing the new movie Ticket to Paradise, Parker was asked about the potential of another Abba return, and his response was surprisingly positive.

Mamma Mia! adapted the popular stage musical of the same name into a mega-hit musical movie in 2008. The film went on to gross over $611 million worldwide, and even though it took ten years for the sequel/prequel to arrive, its $402 million box office proved that there was still an appetite for more of the fluffy fun that comes with the franchise. Back in May 2021, producer Judy Craymer explained that the franchise was always planned as a trilogy, and now Parker has provided a few more details on this. He told Screen Rant:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy. That’s all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn’t it be lovely?”

Mamma Mia 3 Could Feature New Abba Songs

The stage show of Mamma Mia! was originally launched in 1999 in London’s West End and opened on Broadway in 2001. Bringing the ever-popular music of Abba to a whole new audience, it was inevitable that a big screen movie version would follow, and now all these years later, Mamma Mia 3 could potentially bring something that seemed impossible when the original movie was released: new music from Abba.

Since the stage show and movie franchise were launched, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad have reunited for a new album and epic virtual concert, which could lend some of its songs to Mamma Mia 3. Having used up an extensive amount of classic Abba tracks, the reunion could not have come at a better time to provide new music for the franchise to use and make fans even more willing to jump on board another sequel one more time.

What a third Mamma Mia! movie could look like is currently unknown. However, with the majority of the cast still available, it could see a reunion of several familiar faces, including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Lily James, and Pierce Brosnan. But, of course, much of the casting will depend on whether the movie will come to fruition in the near future. Having taken a decade for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again to arrive, many fans will be hoping there isn’t another six-year wait for Mamma Mia 3 to debut if it does get a green light.
