Deion focused on Colorado, not coaching vacancies: ‘I’m good’

Deion Sanders insists he’s focusing on leading Colorado to victory as opposed to looking at other jobs, including the vacancy at Texas A&M.

Sanders was asked Tuesday if he had an interest in the Aggies opening after ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith suggested that Colorado’s coach would be a good fit with the SEC program.

“I want to win a game,” Sanders said, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “You think I really do sit down and think about that kind of stuff? What strikes you about me that you guys really think I sit down, say, ‘Aw, yeah, Stephen A.’ C’mon, I’m good. We’ve got to win.”

The 56-year-old Sanders signed a five-year, $29.5-million contract to become the Buffaloes coach last December. The former NFL star lived in Texas prior to beginning his career as a collegiate coach at Jackson State.

Sanders explained that he doesn’t get asked about his future plans by recruits and their families, but if he did, he would express his commitment to the school and its community.

“I get mail here. I pay taxes here. I don’t hear (speculation). Maybe our recruiting staff hears it, but I don’t hear it. I’m too honest with parents. I’m going to tell them the truth,” Sanders said.

Sanders’ tenure at Colorado has been a family affair for the Hall of Famer. His sons, Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders, transferred from Jackson State to Colorado after he accepted the job.

The Buffaloes have posted a 4-6 record ahead of their game Friday against Washington State. Colorado began its 2023 campaign with three straight victories but is currently riding a four-game losing streak. The program needs wins in its final two games to be eligible for its first bowl appearance since the shortened 2020 season.
