Nobody Really Cares About Acting

Summary

  • Alan Ritchson missed out on playing Thor in 2011’s Marvel film due to overconfidence in his looks, underestimating the importance of acting.
  • While his superhero appearance in
    Smallville
was short-lived, Ritchson became an action hero with Jack Reacher on Prime Video.
  • Production for Season 3 of
    Reacher
is ongoing, promising a fresh storyline full of action and intrigue later this year.

Alan Ritchson has landed on his feet with the role of Jack Reacher, but the 41-year-old had to wait a long time to get his big breakout role in Hollywood. While discussing his career with Men’s Health, the actor remembered one of the potentially career-defining roles that got away from him; Thor.

Although Ritchson has yet to get a shot at playing a role in the MCU, he recalled auditioning for the part of the God of Thunder in 2011’s Thor, but didn’t get very far because he was overly confident that his looks would get him through. He explained:

I didn’t take it seriously. I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.’

However, it seems that Ritchson’s opinion couldn’t be any further from the truth. Following his audition, he says that this team was told that the “role had been his to lose” and that he had simply not “had the craft.” Of course, this opened the way for Chris Hemsworth to nip in and snatch up the role for himself, and the rest is Marvel history.

Ritchson did briefly get to play around in the superhero genre with his appearance as Aquaman in the TV series Smallville, but that was also quite short-lived and did not become the big breakthrough he expected. Almost a decade later, and the first episode of Reacher Season 1 opened up the floodgates on dozens of offers, and now, as Ritchson himself put it, “I knew my life had changed.”

Reacher Season 3 is in Production Now

 Prime Video

The first season of Reacher arrived on Prime Video in 2022 and brought to life Lee Child’s creation in a way that had not been seen on screen before. When Season 2 debuted in 2023, it immediately became the most-watched, most-talked about show on TV. Now, two months later, the subject of Reacher is still one that dominates social media and trending topics, proving beyond doubt the magnitude of the show’s popularity.

Currently, filming is underway on Season 3, which will put Ritchson right back in the action with a brand-new Reacher story. Although there will be many people eagerly awaiting the premiere of the new season, which almost guarantees that the next season will be another huge hit for Prime Video, the almost anthology-like format of the series means that those curious about the series will not have to watch the first two seasons to be able to drop in on the third.

Reacher Season 3 has already been teased as another action-packed entry in the franchise, and with plenty more Jack Reacher novels to be adapted, as long as audiences are watching, Ritchson seems more than happy to keep playing the character.

Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available on Prime Video. Season 3 is expected to premiere towards the end of 2024.
