I Am Legend 2 will attempt something that few, if any, sequels have executed — it will ret-con the original theatrical ending, and instead treat the alternate ending (seen on the home media release) as canon. This is essentially the only way to continue the film with Will Smith, as he sacrificed himself in the first film’s theatrical ending. However, there is one great character who survived both endings and remains one of the few surviving humans by the end of I Am Legend, and that’s Anna, played by the talented Alice Braga. Fans want to see Anna in the second film, although Braga still hasn’t heard anything from the studio, Smith, or the filmmakers.
Braga spoke with MovieWeb about Dark Matter, her new Apple TV+ series with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, but she took a moment to address the I Am Legend sequel:
“Oh no, I haven’t been in conversations.
I don’t know where they are at with it. I would love to see it
. I think it’s a world that I enjoyed a lot participating in. I think it’s interesting. Very much like this world [in
Dark Matter
], it talks a lot about humanity, and it talks a lot about the world nowadays and how we’d cope in an apocalypse.
So I think it would be fun to see it, but no, I haven’t heard anything
.”

“I will say,” added Joel Edgerton, “there has been one moment in my life not too long ago, where someone was like, ‘You know that film I Am Legend, where it’s just Will Smith, and he’s alone in the world? And I’m like, ahem… [clears throat].”
“Well, thank you,” laughed Braga, “you’re a good friend. But then you were like, ‘No, the dog.'”
“Yeah, the Alsatian. Ahem… [clears throat louder].”

Alice Braga Has Grown as an Actress but Would Want to Revisit I Am Legend
Braga previously spoke with Collider last year, before Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan had solidified a relationship for the sequel moving forward. Back in May 2023, Braga said:
“I was super surprised and very curious. I was almost jumping on the phone and saying, ‘Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it? Can I please be in it?’ I’m a huge Akiva [Goldsman, producer and co-writer] fan, I think he’s such a wonderful writer, and he basically was the first writer that I got to see the [work of] close from coming to the US. It was my first American film.
I was very excited to hear that they were continuing with the movie
. I hope they do! I don’t know where they are with it, but I hope they do.”

“It was such a joy to work with them,” added Braga at the time. “And also, it’s interesting because I was 23 when I did the film. It’s been such a long time ago, and I did so much work afterward. I think I grew as an actress, as a woman, and as everything, so it would be nice to revisit that material, that team, to reunite with Akiva, who is a screenwriter that I deeply admire.”
Braga certainly has expanded since 2007’s I Am Legend. She’s starred in films like Redbelt, Elysium, On the Road, The New Mutants, Predators, and Hypnotic. Some of her greatest work as of late has been in television series and miniseries, such as We Are What We Are, A Murder at the End of the World, and especially the exquisite epic, Queen of the South, leading the show as Teresa Mendoza, perhaps her most iconic role so far. She’s adding to that profile with the new Apple TV+ show, Dark Matter, where she gives a sensitive and beautiful performance.
