Barbie Ferreira Wears H&M’s New Sustainable Collection

Barbie Ferreira was one of the first celebrities to get her hands on H&M’s regal Simone Rocha collaboration, so we’re not at all surprised the brand tapped the Euphoria star to model its latest sustainable collection from a project called Innovation Stories. Barbie worked with her stylist of two years, Chris Horan (who was introduced through a mutual client and Barbie’s friend Rowan Blanchard), to select her favorites from the line and curate an outfit that represents her edgy taste. We talked to Horan about their exciting collaboration process.

“It’s nice to be able to incorporate these pieces into a look that is widely accessible and that people can re-create.”

“She has great ideas, and what she likes is always evolving — and that makes every project fun. We usually go through collections and send each other images back and forth. Sometimes, Barbie already has a makeup and hair vibe, and we build a look backwards around that, too.” Horan went on to explain why these neon sandals, which integrate a noticeable vegan leather tag on the heel, were a given: “Color is probably one of the first things we look at, followed by heel height! These acid yellow sandals are so fun, and they are a pretty sensible height — not to mention the shape of the heel feels unique and special. We usually try and avoid insane stilettos when we can!” he said of the footwear that retails for $129.

Though the shoes are electrifying enough to be the first thing you notice, Horan drew our attention to the white, deconstructed denim with the double waistband, which he imagines would also be attractive to Ferreira’s Euphoria character, Kat. “[Kat] might just pair [the jeans] with a latex top or something a little glossier. I think the magic in Kat is that Barbie brings a lot of herself into her look.” In the case of this ensemble, Chris and Barbie balanced the futuristic vibe of the shoes and jeans with a lightweight mint blouse.

All three items are from H&M’s “Science Story” drop, which brings us a line of clothes made from “fabrications of the future,” including Desserto®, a plant-based leather made from organically grown cactus, and EVO by Fulgar®, a bio-based yarn derived from castor oil, which is a renewable resource. The pieces look just like the streetwear we are used to seeing from H&M, but knowing that they were made with the environment in mind and in some really beautiful bursts of pastel and neon just makes them more attractive.

The fact that the clothes look elevated but start at an affordable price point is, of course, refreshing. “It’s nice to be able to incorporate these pieces into a look that is widely accessible and that people can re-create,” Chris said. That’s just the first of several reasons Chris and Barbie like working with H&M. “It’s extremely important to work with size-inclusive brands. A lot of designers offer to make things, but size inclusivity should be for everyone and not just for celebrities. We try and support brands that have extended sizing as much as possible,” he said.
