MacGyver Reboot Canceled at CBS After Five Seasons, Lucas Till Responds

That’s a wrap on the MacGyver reboot, as the CBS reboot has been canceled at the network after a five-season run. The show’s upcoming season 5 finale, set to air on April 30, will now serve as the series final with no season 6 coming. News of the show’s cancellation was confirmed in a statement provided by the network.

“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”

The news of MacGyver ending has also been hard on lead star Lucas Till, who wrote about the development with a lengthy post on Instagram. It reads: “Where to begin? The past five years have been what I will look on later as THE most formative years of my life. Lots of tough, lots of love. I made life long friends, actually no, family. I learned to push myself to new limits, breaking through and through and through.”

Lucas Till also addresses how grateful he is for the fans accepting him in the role, as he was nervous to take the mantle of an icon and his memories of filming the series in Georgia. Before closing out his statement, Till throws some extra thanks to the fans along with his fellow cast and crew by writing, “This format just doesn’t do enough justice for all that I want to say, so maybe this is the first of many blubbering messages, but thank you, my new family, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. All of you.”

A reimagining of the drama series of the same name that first aired back in 1985, MacGyver premiered on CBS in 2016. The show follows Lucas Till as Angus MacGyver, an undercover government agent who relies on ingenious feats of engineering rather than lethal force to fight crime. The first three seasons co-starred George Eads as Jack Dalton before the actor departed the series. As the season 5 finale has already been filmed, Eads isn’t expected to appear in the final episode.

While the MacGyver reboot is ending, a parody series based on the franchise is in the works at Peacock. Reprising his role from Saturday Night Live and the MacGruber movie, Will Forte will play the MacGyver-like spoof character in his own upcoming TV series. In August, Peacock gave the MacGruber show a series order, and it’s expected to premiere on the streamer sometime in 2021. Forte will executive produce alongside John Solomon and director Jorma Taccone.

The series finale of MacGyver will air on Friday, April 30, on CBS. This news comes to us from Deadline.
