Heels Trailer Arrives, Stephen Amell Enters the Wild World of Wrestling on Starz

After taking a short break from acting, Stephen Amell is back on the small screen in the first trailer for his new series Heels. The trailer sheds new light on the premise for the show and gives us a few glimpses of the wrestling action. The series will follow Jack Spade (Amell) and his brother Ace (Vikings’ Alexander Ludwig) as they drop their humble careers to pursue a future in wrestling. In addition to some intense wrestling sequences, the trailer promises plenty of drama between the brothers as it teases a potential wrestling match between the two.

This will be Amell’s first major acting role since his tentpole superhero show Arrow ended in early 2020. His new show will serve as familiar territory for the actor due to his real life experience in the wrestling ring. In 2015, Stephen Amell teamed up with Neville and went on to defeat Stardust and King Barrett in a classic WWE bout. The fight was a big draw for the WWE as it brought in plenty of comic book viewers due to Amell’s presence. Although Stardust and Amell ended the fight on unfriendly terms, Stardust would later go on to guest star on Arrow for a few episodes.

The production for Heels has been complicated at best for many reasons. The first problem that struck the show was of course COVID-19, which significantly delayed filming. The delay got so uncertain, in fact, that Stephen Amell revealed that he considered returning to the so-called “Arrowverse” and reprise his role as Oliver Queen. He had this to say on an episode of Inside of You.

“I called Greg (Berlanti) up and said just that. I said, ‘Look, I hope this doesn’t happen, but if everything goes to s–t and you guys can’t get actors up here because of issues about mostly American actors crossing into Canada, and if things can’t be figured out, here’s the deal, man. I’m here and if I have to stay here, I want to work. If I’m going to work, let’s just figure out a way to bring Oliver back from the dead.'”

Of course, this never came to be, however, as Heels eventually did go into production. More problems arose in filming when Amell sustained a fairly significant back injury while performing a stunt. Deadline.com reported this story, sharing that Amell was sent home for a brief time in order to recuperate. Thankfully, he made a full recovery and came back to complete filming of the series for its season one run. Starz has not yet picked up the drama for season two..

Heels will release on Starz on August 15, 2021. Along with Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig, the show will co-star Kelli Berglund, Roxton Garcia, James Harrison Jr. as Apocalypse, Melissa LeEllen, Alison Luff, Joel Murray, and Robby Ramos as Diego Cottonmouth. The first season will consist of eight episodes and release weekly every Sunday on the cable channel. It is currently unknown if Starz plans on making multiple seasons of the show or if it will remain as a mini-series.
