Apple Martin Wears Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscars Dress From 2002

Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple Martin looks like the spitting image of her mom trying on her Alexander McQueen dress from the 2002 Oscars. On Thursday, June 15, Paltrow entertained questions from fans on her Instagram Stories, one of which read, “does apple ever wear any of ur fashion archives?” Underneath, the 50-year-old Hollywood A-lister and entrepreneur posted a photo from what appeared to be an impromptu fitting in her closet, answering the question with a visual “yes.”

Paltrow’s McQueen Oscars look was originally styled with a pendant on a black cord choker and chandelier drop earrings. Her hair was side-parted into a braided updo, and she sported a smokey, shimmering eye and glossy pink lip. Of course, Martin, 19, seemed to be slipping into the outfit more casually, with her hair fashioned in a messy ponytail and minimal accessories, including a white beaded necklace, gold timepiece, and bangle. The dress definitely fit both women like a glove (Paltrow was 29 at the time of the gown’s debut).

Interestingly enough, the Goop founder discussed some of her most significant fashion moments with Vogue two years ago, remembering the McQueen number as a wardrobe critique. “Everybody really hated this by the way,” she recalled, upon looking at a photo of herself from the 74th annual Academy Awards ceremony. “But I think it’s kinda dope. Like, I’m into it,” she continued. “I had like a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth. I think people thought it was too hard. So I think it sort of shocked people, but I like it.”

It’s not the first time folks have pointed to the similarities between the mother-daughter duo — especially from a fashion perspective. In January, Martin sat front row at the unveiling of the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2023 collection, marking her first runway show ever. Her tweed black-and-white checked suiting was similar to the ensemble Paltrow wore to the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016 show. And now they can both be considered muses of the French luxury fashion house.
