Kate Hudson Sports Comedy ‘Running Point’ Tops Netflix Charts

It looks like Netflix’s latest sports show is dunking on the competition. Running Point, the latest series from The Sex Lives of College Girls creator and star of The Office Mindy Kaling, only just debuted on February 27, 2025, but it’s already become a huge hit with fans. The Kate Hudson-starrer has shot to the top of the U.S. streaming charts in only five days. So far up, in fact, we’re going to need a few more good basketball puns to prove it to you.

As it currently stands, Running Point is the number one show currently (as of March 3, 2025) streaming in the U.S. on Netflix. Who says love and basketball don’t mix? (Not Gina Prince-Bythewood, that’s for sure.) The workplace rom-comedy wrapped in a sports jersey has tickled fans’ fancy and proven that people want to watch attractive people be funny, partake in physical activity, and maybe fall in love with one another. At least from time to time. Especially with an all-star comedy cast like the one Running Point has on its team. Which is exactly the reason why the show is topping their list of shows right now.

‘Running Point’ Is A Hit Thanks To Its Cast And Creative Team

“Running Point puts a bold twist on the underdog comedy,” the official Netflix press site proclaims of the Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen-created series. It also goes on to say this (via its official synopsis):

When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job.

It’s a tale as old as time, isn’t it: A bunch of brothers overlook and/or second-guess their solitary sister and her business and/or sports abilities because she’s, well, a girl and that’s just how life works for us sometimes, eh? Thankfully, the series doesn’t rely so fully on the “ra-ra, girl power!” surface-level feminism that one might anticipate in a broad workplace comedy such as this. But it also doesn’t re-invent the wheel or challenge viewers on that sort of thing, either — making it an easily digestible bit of comedic fun with characters you’ll (almost always) be rooting for to win.

And speaking of characters: there are many. Even if you weren’t sold on the Kate Hudson of it all, the series also features an impressively-resumed cast alongside a multitude of talented guest stars that shape its quirky world. Starring alongside Kate Hudson in the series are Brenda Song (The Last Showgirl, Dollface), Drew Tarver (The Other Two), Scott MacArthur (The Righteous Gemstones), Fabrizio Guido (Perry Mason, Mr. Iglesias), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Toby Sandeman (The Game), Chet Hanks (yes, as in Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s son), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Roberto Sanchez (Palm Royale), Uche Agada (Rise), Dane DiLiegro (Prey), and Justin Theroux (I mean…what hasn’t he been in, at this point).

If that doesn’t have you convinced to check it out, maybe some review stats will? Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Running Point is currently sitting pretty with a 91% audience score on the Popcornmeter and 76% on the critics-scoring Tomatometer. Meaning everyone seems to be enjoying the easy, breezy, light and enjoyable comedic fare that Running Point is offering. So what are you waiting for/why are you still reading this? Don’t tell me you were waiting for another sports pun — we’re too afraid we’ll put up a brick (sorry, I only played JV basketball in high school because I was required to play on a sports team)!
