Argylle Director Teases Several Sequels, New Images From the Spy Comedy Released

Summary

  • “Argylle” director Matthew Vaughn confirms plans for two sequels, the first exploring the origin of the spy.
  • The meta-approach of the first film will be left behind for the sequels, which will be based on further books in the series.
  • Henry Cavill expresses excitement about continuing to portray Agent Argylle, highlighting the importance of a good story and fit within his overall career goals.

The spy action comedy Argylle starring Henry Cavill is due to hit theaters next month, and director Matthew Vaughn has big plans for the franchise. Speaking with Total Film, who have also released a pair of new images from the movie, Vaughn reveals that he has two sequels already in mind, with the first following a younger version of Cavill’s super spy.

“Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film. And then Argylle 2 is – I don’t want to give it all away, but there’s the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry, because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well.”

Argylle will take a meta-approach to the spy adaptation, with Bryce Dallas Howard portraying author Elly Conway, who finds herself drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to reality. Thus, the sequels would be based on further books, adhering closer to them and largely leaving the meta-stylings behind.

And it sounds like Henry Cavill is equally eager to star in more adventures as Agent Argylle.

“I think it’s a fun character. I mean, it depends on where we go with it, really, as with anything. I have a great relationship with Matthew, so that would be the hard part out of the way. The next bit is just building a story. As long as the story is good, and the character has a place to go, and it fits in with everything else that I’m trying to build and do, then great.”

Vaughn hopes that Argylle will be successful enough to spawn sequels, urging audiences to support “original stuff.”

“Everybody complains there’s not enough original stuff, but it’s because they don’t go see it. People have got to buy tickets first, or there won’t be f—ing anything.”

“Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.”
