“Eileen is a peculiar young woman — aloof and unfazed by the gloomy nature of her job at the local youth prison. But something in her changes the day that the new counsellor, Dr. Rebecca St. John arrives. She is instantly captivated by Rebecca’s glamorous, enigmatic presence. As the two women grow closer, Eileen is inspired to explore new facets of her own personality and desires. But her metamorphosis takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret — throwing Eileen onto a much more sinister path.”

Directed by William Oldroyd and starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway, Eileen is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh and has been adapted for the big screen by Moshfegh and her husband Luke Goebel. Eileen Has Received Critical Acclaim and Praise for Anne Hathaway & Thomasin McKenzie’s Performances

NEON

Eileen premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival back in January and has since been met with critical acclaim. The thriller currently stands at 89% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with particular attention and praise being paid to both Hathaway and McKenzie.

Jessica Kiang of Variety notes that the weirdness of Eileen may put some audiences off, but that if you can stomach it, there is a lot to love in this tale of a parasitic relationship between the two women.

“It might prove an off-putting cocktail in some quarters, but the weirdos among us will find “Eileen’s” sheer chutzpah, couched as it is in classy, clever filmmaking, curiously exhilarating and addictive.”

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter meanwhile heaped praise on the work from both McKenzie and Hathaway, describing them as “expertly synced.”

“Rippling with sly humor and a bold command of the tropes of classic Hitchcockian suspense, this is a twisty and beguiling original, led by contrasting but expertly synced performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway.”

Lastly, Ross Bonaime of Collider teases plenty of surprises to come:

“Eileen is an intriguing little story that shifts and alters the further it goes, playing with the audience, and giving them the opposite of what they’re expecting.”

The release of Eileen will begin with a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 1, 2023, before a wider release on December 8, 2023.
