Fandango Ushers in the Year of the Sequel with 2024’s Most Anticipated Movies Poll Results

Summary

  • 2024 is expected to have highly anticipated sequels and franchise films, with Deadpool 3 at the top of the list.
  • Previous big franchise movies in 2023 failed to meet expectations and generate interest.
  • The survey reveals that all of the top ten most anticipated movies for 2024 are linked to a franchise, with original movies being left out.

Big franchise movies failed to deliver for the most part in 2023, but it seems that 2024 is already gearing up to be another year of highly anticipated sequels and franchise films according to a new poll by Fandango. Top of the pile is Deadpool 3, in a revelation that is certainly going to come as a relief to Marvel Studios and Disney.

In a survey of over 8000 ticket buyers, Fandango discovered that over 80% of people are looking forward to 2024’s cinematic offerings more than the movies that arrived in 2023. Consider this year saw some big titles like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Flash and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the box office of all of these and more failed to spark the interest that studios expected and hoped for. The DCEU and MCU were two of the biggest losers in terms of lost revenue, with both franchises seeing most of their releases struggle to break even. Now, all eyes are turning to 2024 as a possible return to form with some big sequels dominating the most anticipated movies of the year.

The Top Ten list reads:

  • Deadpool 3
  • Beetlejuice 2
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
  • Dune: Part Two
  • Venom 3
  • Despicable Me 4
  • Inside Out 2
  • Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim
  • Gladiator 2
  • A Quiet Place: Day One
  • The list provides an interesting insight into exactly what people are looking forward to, and it seems that original movies have been completely edged out by a list entirely made up of sequels, a prequel and an animated Lord of the Rings movie.

Which Characters Do People Want to See in 2024?

Fandango does not just look at the movies that people are desperate to see in the coming year, but also expands to look at a number of other categories.

Among the table-toppers in categories looking at the characters fans want to see the most are Lady Gaga’s turn as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as Wolverine and Deadpool, and Michael Keaton’s return as Beetlejuice in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2.

When splitting out 2024s movies into individual genres, Deadpool 3 unsurprisingly tops the superhero list; Beetlejuice 2 appears at the top of both the comedy and Horror/Suspense/Thrillers categories; Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire beats Dune: Part Two in the Action/Adventure category; Despicable Me 4 kicks Disney’s Inside Out 2 into second place in the Family Movie category.

Of course the survey does not directly translate into big box office bonanzas, and any of these movies, no matter how highly anticipated, could quite easily go the same way as many of 2023s biggest movies. After the shutdowns because of the Covid pandemic, writers and actors’ strikes, and a general lack of interest in the theatrical experience, it is hard to imagine 2024 being any worse for Hollywood.
