Margot Robbie Takes Over Netflix Chart With a Critically Panned 2016 Flop

Summary

  • Margot Robbie’s performance in The Legend of Tarzan gained praise for redefining the character of Jane, despite the film receiving a dismal critical reaction.
  • The movie has experienced a surge of interest after being added to Netflix, quickly climbing to the number one spot on the platform’s Top 10 movies list in the U.S.
  • Robbie’s current success and ability to draw in an audience may lead to future projects, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, finally moving forward.

Margot Robbie never fails to capture an audience, and her recent success as Barbie has proven that. Coming off the back of the huge box office and critical acclaim of the Greta Gerwig movie, one of Robbie’s lesser known movies has seen a surge of interest following its addition to Netflix.

The David Yates-directed The Legend of Tarzan, first released in 2016 to a dismal critical reaction, stars Robbie alongside a very capable cast of Alexander Skarsgård, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson. Despite being called sluggish and boring by many critics, leading to its Rotten Tomatoes score languishing around 35%, Robbie’s turn as Jane, the fearless and strong-minded wife of Tarzan, did gain praise for redefining the character.

The story of Tarzan and Jane is revisited by The Legend of Tarzan, but this time with a modern twist as it focuses their return to Africa rather than usual story of the wild man of the jungle becoming acquainted with a more human world. While it went on raking in more than $350 million worldwide, the film is not one of Robbie’s movies that instantly come to mind among her colorful catalog of hits, including her frequent appearances as Harley Quinn in DC’s Suicide Squad movies.

Thanks to its recent addition on Netflix, this adventurous tale has come back into the public’s eye, and has taken no time in becoming the latest movie to find a whole new audience thanks to the streaming platform. Climbing to the number one spot on Netflix’s list of Top 10 movies in the U.S., The Legend of Tarzan overtook new releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Kevin Hart’s Lift in its first day of streaming, highlighting Robbie’s current status as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Margot Robbie Is Taking Over Hollywood

Warner Bros. Pictures
Sony Pictures Releasing

Margot Robbie’s rise to fame has been marked by a series of hugely successful roles, from her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street to fan-favorite Harley Quinn. Taking on a series of diverse and often unexpected roles, her casting by Gerwig as “Stereotypical Barbie” in last year’s highest grossing movie, was probably one of the smartest decisions made in cinema for many years, and has only elevated Robbie to a whole new level.

The runaway success of Barbie has made not only Robbie one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses but is allowing her to step into the role of producer on new projects that she has a vested interest in. Having recently hinted that she may look to take a little time away from being in front of the camera, the star’s future certainly looks set to continue growing in the coming years.

The renewed interest in The Legend of Tarzan on Netflix has proven Robbie’s current power to draw in an audience simply by appearing in a movie, no matter whether it is new or old, good or bad. This could mean that the frequently touted Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, which Robbie is reportedly expected to take the lead of, could finally see its development move forward after being stalled for the last couple of years. While that project is still in doubt, the actress’ next appearance is most likely to come in an Ocean’s 11 prequel movie, which could reunite her with her Barbie costar, Ryan Gosling.

The Legend of Tarzan is now streaming on Netflix.
