Sicario 3 Aims for Original Trio Reunion with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro

Summary

  • Producers of the Sicario film series are excited about the potential third installment and plan to bring back the original cast.
  • Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the team remains optimistic about the actors’ involvement and the progress of the script.
  • Benicio del Toro’s character will continue to be the focus of Sicario 3, and the producers and actors are determined to make the film according to their vision, even if it means waiting for an extended period due to the strike.

Producers of the Sicario film series are contemplating a third installment that could potentially see the return of the original cast, which includes Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro. The first film, released in 2015, introduced audiences to the drug war at the U.S.-Mexico border. It centered on an FBI agent, Blunt’s character, who is enlisted by a government task force to combat the drug trade. Sicario: Day of the Soldado, released in 2018, continued the storyline, highlighting the escalating drug war as cartels began trafficking terrorists across the border. In the sequel, Brolin’s character, federal agent Matt Graver, and Alejandro, portrayed by Benicio, reteamed to confront this threat.

Speaking with Collider, producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill shared their enthusiasm for the project and their intent to bring the trio back together. Despite challenges posed by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, they remain optimistic about the prospect of the actors returning. The strike has caused some delays in the scriptwriting process, but the producers emphasized that those involved are well-informed and eager to continue the story.

“Our idea is to get the cast back together with Benicio, Emily, and Josh, and we’ve got a great story to tell… Benicio, by nature of just working with us most recently, has been probably the closest to it at the moment. But we’re keeping all the talent informed. They’ve stayed close to it. Like Trent said, the strike has just slowed us down a bit on this last draft, but I think everybody is very excited. Everyone sort of knows the framework of the story and is very excited to, hopefully, get our shooting draft in order very soon.”

Sicario 3 Production to Resume When Strikes Are Resolved

Sony Pictures Releasing

Sicario 3 will maintain its focus on Benicio del Toro’s character, and producer Basil Iwanyk is enthusiastic about the prospect. He believes that Benicio’s portrayal of the character never gets old, and fans can’t seem to get enough of it. Producer Erica Lee also expressed enthusiasm for the third installment, describing the concept as “awesome.”

“I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”

Meanwhile, Josh Brolin is undeterred by potential delays. He eagerly anticipates returning for Sicario 3, even if it means waiting for an extended period. The script for the third film has already been written and revised, and the team remains determined to create it according to their vision.

“I just don’t know when we’ll do it. We may be 80. (Laughs.) But it’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it. So don’t give up! (Laughs.)”

Sicario 3 is currently on hold due to the Hollywood strike.
