The latest video game adaptation to enter development is ToeJam & Earl. THR reports that Amazon Studios has put into motion a feature film based on the video game series with the help of Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and Story Kitchen. Dmitri M. Johnson and Dan Jevons (Sonic the Hedgehog, John Wick) of Story Kitchen are producing alongside Curry and Erick Peyton of Unanimous, while Story Kitchen’s Mike Goldberg is co-producing. Executive producers include Story Kitchen’s Timothy I. Stevenson, Unanimous’ Jenelle Lindsay, and ToeJam & Earl creators Mark Voorsanger and Greg Johnson.

The screenplay for the movie adaptation will be written by Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo (Hotel Transylvania 4). Additionally, a synopsis for the film that they’ll be writing has also been released, and you can read it below.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“ToeJam & Earl centers on two space-alien rappers who come to Earth seeking a cure for the disease eradicating their home planet’s rhythm, funk and groove. Earth, their legends tell them, is the Paradise where the music that created their culture originated. Unfortunately for our heroes, not only do they wreck their ship, but they find that Earth is . . . well, not the haven they expected. But the music – that part was true. So begins their quest to find as much of that music as they can in the hope of saving their planet, and maybe ours as well.”

ToeJam & Earl Follows Sonic and Mario as the Latest Video Game Movie

Sega

Video game adaptations have been seeing a boom in popularity after the success of films like Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. There are many upcoming projects based on popular games as well, such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which marks Nintendo’s return to the big screen after the original Mario film bombed in 1993. New shows are also in development based on titles like The Last of Us and Twisted Metal. Other classic Sega games such as Streets of Rage will also be made into a movie.

The original ToeJam & Earl video game was released on the Sega Genesis console in 1991, following a pair of rapping aliens after they’ve crash-landed on Earth. The game, praised for its humor and other qualities, brought about various sequels in the years to come. ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotrown was released on the Genesis in 1993 followed by the release of ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth on the original Xbox in 2002. More recently, the franchise was revived with the game ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, which was developed by HumaNature and created without the involvement of Sony. That game, available on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, was released in 2019.

The ToeJam & Earl movie does not yet have a release date.
