Anderson suspended 6 games for brawl, Ramirez gets 3-game ban

Major League Baseball disciplined multiple players and coaches following Saturday’s brawl between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.

MLB handed White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson a six-game suspension and a fine for exchanging punches with Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez. Ramirez received a three-game ban and a fine. Both players are appealing their punishments and will be available to their teams until a verdict is rendered.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, manager Terry Francona, and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh each earned one-game suspensions, as did White Sox skipper Pedro Grifol. Clase, Francona, and Grifol will serve their bans during their respective team’s games Monday, while Sarbaugh will sit out of Cleveland’s Tuesday contest.

White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech and Guardians outfielder Gabriel Arias were also fined undisclosed amounts for their actions during the melee.

Ramirez appeared to take issue with Anderson’s hard tag as he slid into second base during Saturday’s contest. After exchanging words, the two stars squared off and traded punches as both dugouts and bullpens cleared.

The ensuing brawl continued for several minutes and eventually moved into foul territory, where Sarbaugh and Grifol tried to get at each other. Teammates quickly restrained and removed Anderson, who had to be escorted from the field a second time after trying to return to the brawl.

Ramirez said postgame that Anderson has “been disrespecting the game for a while.” Anderson didn’t speak to the media following the incident.

The White Sox and Guardians don’t play each other again this season.
