Celtics, Brown agree to richest deal in NBA history at 5 years, $304M

The Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown agreed to a five-year super-max extension worth up to $304 million, Brown’s agent told ESPN’s Marc J. Spears.

It is the richest contract in the history of the NBA.

Brown’s new deal eclipses the previous record set by Nikola Jokic, who inked a five-year, $270-million extension during the 2022 offseason.

The 26-year-old’s five-year term is fully guaranteed and also contains a trade kicker, sources told Shams Charania of The Athletic. However, he will be unable to be traded until the summer of 2024, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

The Celtics star is projected to earn nearly $70 million in the 2028-29 campaign alone, courtesy of Marks:

  • 2024-25: $52.4 million
  • 2025-26: $56.6 million
  • 2026-27: $60.7 million
  • 2027-28: $64.9 million
  • 2028-29: $69.1 million

Brown tallied a career-high 26.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest this past season while averaging 3.5 assists and shooting 33.5% on 7.3 attempts from distance per game. He earned a spot on the 2023 All-NBA second team, a feat that made him eligible to receive the super-max this summer, but only from the Celtics.
