Day says Ohio State ‘devastated’ by latest loss to Michigan: ‘I’m just sick’

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day expressed disappointment following his team’s 30-24 road loss to Michigan on Saturday.

“I’m just sick,” Day said postgame, according to Bryan Fischer of Fox Sports.

The Buckeyes – who won eight straight versus the Wolverines from 2012-19 – have now lost their last three matchups against their archrivals. It’s Michigan’s first three-game win streak in the series since 1995-97.

Michigan and Ohio State played a close game on Saturday at the Big House, in which the Wolverines’ defense came up clutch with two interceptions, including a game-sealing pick in the final seconds of the fourth quarter after Michigan converted a late field goal to extend its lead.

“We’re all disappointed,” Day added, per Fox College Football. “We know what this game means to so many people. To come up short is certainly crushing, if not only because you invest your whole year in it. We know at Ohio State what this game means. There’s a locker room in there that’s devastated. It wasn’t by a lack of effort, but again, we didn’t win the rushing yards, and we didn’t win the turnover battle.”

Day has posted a 56-7 record since being named Ohio State’s head coach in 2019, but the 44-year-old is 1-3 against Michigan. The Wolverines’ latest victory will have major implications in the College Football Playoff rankings, as Saturday’s matchup featured the second- and third-ranked teams in the nation. With the victory, Michigan also clinched a spot in the Big Ten title game versus Iowa.

“Hurts. That’s really the only word for it,” Day said, according to Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors. “To work that hard for that opportunity and to come up a few plays short hurts. There’s no way around that. It’s a tough feeling.”

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said in the offseason that Day wasn’t on the hot seat despite the Buckeyes’ recent record versus Michigan. However, Smith – who plans to retire in June 2024 – also said that his team needed a different approach to win its rivalry matchups and take down the Wolverines.
